Thinking Pink in October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Whether you or someone you care about has been affected by breast cancer, or you just want to lend your support, October is the time to start THINKING PINK! Here are a few easy ways to get involved:

1. Worldwide, people are going to be burning calories for a good cause! For the first ever, a Zumba event will be funded by a medical research grant. By taking part in a Zumbathon event you can play a role in raising funds for global research for breast cancer prevention. Through October 31 you can attend a Party in Pink Zumbathon charity event where 75 percent of ticket fees go towards breast cancer research. Here’s the website for more details.

2. Dress to impress. Pink has become a universally known symbol associated with breast cancer awareness. Whether pink is your favorite color, or you just want a way to get involved, wearing a pink ribbon lapel pin is a simple way to show solidarity for such an important issue. Learn how to make your own with a pink ribbon pin!

3. Promenade in pink! Through out the month of October, people all over the country will be walking to fight breast cancer. Here’s a walk happening in the area soon you should check out. The 2013 Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer

4. Shop for a cause! Many companies will be donating part of their proceeds to breast cancer prevention through out the month of October, products at places like Target, Estée Lauder, Avon, and Ralph Lauren. In addition, Ulta is rewarding shoppers who donate to the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation with several different special events, offers, and deals on services! Check out their Donate with a Kiss campaign to fight breast cancer.

5. Eat yogurt! Yoplait’s campaign Save Lids to Save Lives will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for every yogurt lid collected or for each code entered from select Yoplait products. By eating Yoplait you can join the fight against breast cancer by collecting as many pink yogurt lids as possible and sending them together in the mail or select lids have codes that can be redeemed online. It’s a yummy, not to mention healthy, way to contribute to such an important cause!

6. If none of the above options strike your interest you can always donate to a number of different organizations such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Susan G. Komen, or the American Cancer Society. It is a simple and direct way to contribute to the fight against breast cancer! Links to donate:

So the next time you think there is nothing you can do to contribute to such an important cause as breast cancer, remember that every little action counts! There are tons of different ways for you to get involved and show your support. Whether it’s partying in pink at a Zumbathon event, or just wearing a pink lapel pin during the day, you can make an impact. And with some of these suggestions you could burn a few calories or shop for some great products while sticking it to breast cancer!
