Ten Things to Know Before a Music Festival

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Now that the weather is warming up, people are starting to gather at music festivals again. Maybe this year will be the summer you decide to go to one. Maybe you have no idea what to do or even what to wear. Fret not, here are 10 things you should know/do before you attend one.

1. Stay hydrated

It will get hot and you will be dancing, so make sure you drink enough water. This is super important to keep in mind because a lot of people don’t drink enough water to stay hydrated. Some people carry around camelbak packs, which are backpacks with a built-in water bottle.

2. Pack light

There is no need to bring all your makeup or every camera lens you own. If you’re doing the camping music festivals, leave a lot of the stuff in your car. If you aren’t, then all you really need are ID, keys, cash, phone, and your ticket. The more you bring, the greater chance you’ll lose something. A little crossbody bag or backpack will suffice.

3. Don’t take substances from strangers

Whether you pay for it or not, you can’t trust strangers. Any drugs you may get at a music festival could be laced with other awful substances. Be safe!

4. Always have a buddy

Never wander off on your own. And if you happen to lose your buddy, make sure you guys have a designated meet-up spot. Nothing is worse than being alone in a music festival.

5. Invest in a portable phone charger/charger case.

Not every music festival has charging stations, and if they do, you don’t want to be waiting around for your phone to charge. You phone will run out of batteries because you’ll want to take pictures and videos. The best thing to do is to invest in a small portable charger or a charger case, like mophie, so you can charge your phone while you jam out to the music.

6. Write down important information

In case your phone does die and you do lose your buddy, you should have a piece of paper with contact information handy. Just jot down your buddy’s number on a piece of paper and stick it in your pocket.

7. Bring a jacket

It will get a little chilly at night, so you should bring a really light jacket. Or maybe a plaid button down to use as a jacket. You’ll be thanking yourself for it later.

8. Wear comfortable shoes

You will be dancing a lot and walking a lot. It’s essential that you wear comfortable shoes because if you don’t, you’ll hate yourself by the end of the day. Wear sneakers or canvas shoes or comfy sandals, like converses. Don’t wear your platform heels.

9. Bring cash

This was stated briefly before, but it’s super important that you bring cash. If you want to buy food or water, they’ll most likely only take cash. And there are ATMs but the fee to use them will be really expensive. No one wants to pay that.

10. Get pumped and have fun!

You’re in the prime of your life, so live it up. Get a little crazy and have a little fun. Trust me, you will have fun. It’ll be great, with the summer skies, warm weather, and great company. Be excited because these will be the years.
