Sivan Sax ’15 President of Consulting Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Many know her as the talented cake baker. Or as a barista at the Davenport Coffee Lounge. Others know sunshine state native Sivan Sax as president of the AU Consulting Club and student in the Kogod School of Business. As leader of the organization Sivan schedules meetings, creates events, and communicates club operations with members. We talked with Sivan about running the club and why conculting is underated.

1) What are you majoring/minoring in?

I am majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Psychology.

2) Why did you decide to come to AU?

I decided to come to AU because of the opportunity and vibrant life surrounding campus in DC. I love having a vibrant life on and off campus so that balance was important to me. Most importantly perhaps was the ability to build connections in college to help me in the professional field once I graduate. I have learned it is not about building connections, but gathering as much information as you can to make informed decisions personally and professionally.

3) How did you get involved with consulting club and what is the club currently doing?

I got involved with the consulting club by meeting the founder, Colin Musselman last year. I recently took over the club as President and love it! The club is currently putting together the schedule for the semester which consists of numerous “Brown Bag Lunches” with professionals, a surprise field trip, and a huge IT/Consulting panel event towards the end of the semester.

4) How did you learn to take a leadership role?

That is a good question. I have led groups and organizations in the past so that definitely helped in terms of skills and dedication needed. For the Consulting Club specifically, I shadowed Colin all last semester and saw how he conducted himself and really soaked in all I could during that time. It has truly been great!

5) Since you started leading the club what has been the most challenging?

The most challenging part since beginning to lead the club has been educating my peers on why consulting is so exciting! A lot of friends are skeptical or just do not know enough about this wonderful field so my team and I are trying to break that skepticism and educate!

6) What else on campus are you involved in?

I am involved in Semper Fidelis, which is affiliated with supporting the Marines. I also am a barista at the Davenport Coffee Lounge on campus, which is truly the best job a student can have on campus!

7) What do you see yourself doing in the future career wise?

I recently narrowed my focus with what I want within the Consulting field. It can be quite broad and overwhelming, but since I am minoring in Psychology and love the combination of Psych and Business, I am aiming towards a career in Organizational Development. This field focuses on the people and getting them on board to solve the issues within a business. If there was a transition in management for instance, the people might be upset or unwilling to cooperate. It would be my job to facilitate this transition with ease using a little bit of business and psychology combined. I love helping people and this would be the perfect way to do so in a way I am passionate about!

Favorite Spot on Campus
There’s a great relaxing spot behind the amphitheater in what I call the “relaxing garden”. It is truly a hidden treasure and a great place to relax from the crazy day.

Favorite Class at AU
My favorite class at AU was College Writing with Professor McDonald. The class was centered on Food Writing and was so helpful and interesting! I own my own baking business back home so taking this class helped me learn about food through writing and helped me write on a subject I am passionate about.

Best DC adventure you’ve had
This one is tough. I pulled an all-nighter and walked from Georgetown, to the White House, to the Washington Monument, and then to the Lincoln Memorial to watch the sunrise. It was breathtaking and truly humbling.
