Restaurant Review: Busboys and Poets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

A couple of weeks into my D.C. experience and I was already feeling really homesick. I hadn’t had the time to go out and explore (between welcome week and settling in, life was crazy!) so I didn’t feel like a “true Washingtonian.” So when my uncle came into the city he took me out to a D.C. staple, Busboys and Poets near 5th and K street.

From looking at the exterior, I could tell that this place was something interesting. The two sculptures by contemporary artists placed right on the corner outside the restaurant really set the stage for the unique experience you find inside. When you first walk into the restaurant, it’s a little overwhelming from the shelves and shelves of books to the hustle and bustle of people, but when you go to sit down it’s an entirely different experience. Not only is it a restaurant, but it’s also a bookstore. Sometimes they hold awesome events such as poetry slams and author readings.

If you want to go for breakfast they serve the traditional eggs, bacon and toast variety, as you would find at other restaurants until 11:00am. They also serve brunch on weekends until 3pm. I personally went for dinner and ordered the gluten-free meat pizza. Because I can’t eat wheat, finding a decent sized and decent priced pizza around here is hard. I can definitely say that I would 100% go back and order that exact same meal again.

The best part is that for all the vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free people out there, there are a variety of foods for everyone to enjoy at a price that college-students can afford.

To get to this specific location is one of four restaurants in the DMV area. To get to this one from AU, just hop onto the metro on the red line towards Glenmont and get off at the Chinatown stop. You walk down 7th street, turn right onto H street and then left onto 5th towards K street. Once you see the amazing sculptures on the corner, you’ll know you’re there.

Check out Busboys and Poets Facebook page and Youtube channel to see what current events are going on at each of their restaurants.
