Recap: SUB’s Spring Comedy Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

On Wednesday night, the AU Student Union Board presented its Spring Comedy Show, with comedians Vanessa Bayer, Mike Birbiglia and Streeter Seidell.

If you didn’t attend it’s probably…

The hilarious trio cheered up students who were forced to return to classes, after a four and a half day weekend.

Vanessa Bayer is known for role as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and as Nikki in Amy Schumer’s 2015 movie Trainwreck.

If you can’t remember where you know Mike Birbiglia from, it’s probably Trainwreck where he played Amy Schumer’s brother-in-law. Or maybe from The Fault In Our Stars, where he played Patrick – cue the “aha” moment.

Streeter Seidell is known for being a genius writer for Saturday Night Live as well as a cast member, editor and writer for College Humor.

With these three incredible comedic minds, it’s no wonder the show was incredible. Bender Arena was packed and partially full of laughter as Streeter Seidell opened the show. Seidell joked about the applause fading in the midst of his awkwardly long walk to the stage. He also remarked about how he had to walk 150 yards to the stage which was only 50 feet from the audience. Seidell also talked about how he almost came to AU, but was rejected. The rest of his set was hilarious and included a pretty spot on British accent.

Following Seidell, was Vanessa Bayer, our #WCW for this week. Bayer joked about being a communications major and how “easy” it was, saying “[Communications majors] are here because they have nothing to do!” (No shade towards SOC students!) As one would hope, Bayer reprised her hit SNL character Laura Parsons, a child actress who appears on the show’s “Weekend Update” segment. She also played and critiqued a ridiculous Vistaprint commercial, as well as a 24-year-old Bayer on Dating On Demand. She shared a particularly funny story of how Miley Cyrus texted her, and after she showed off about it, Miley let her know that she had texted the wrong Vanessa!

The headliner, Mike Birbiglia brought the house down. His set included jokes that American University sounded like an international scam, to tell the world that we are the only university in America. He was very clear that his pet peeve is tardiness and discussed what it was like to grow up Catholic, joking that “[Jesus] was the original Bernie Sanders.” Birbiglia talked about a rough gig he had sharing the stage with the Muppets, that began with him cursing in front of the wrong kind of audience. He also told the crowd the story of his arrest as a young comedian and how the arresting officer took an extra mug shot of him in case he became famous (good call.)

Overall, SUB brought a hilarious show to AU, a fun change from the usual spring music shows – thank you SUB, Streeter Seidell, Vanessa Bayer and Mike Birbiglia!
