Name: Marc H. Lewis

Year: Sophomore (2015)

Major: Political Science & Secondary Education (double major)

Why did you choose AU?: I chose AU because I like how AU emphasizes the notion of not just viewing D.C. as a city the school is located in but rather my who lab that I can experiment in by getting involved with various organizations and interacting with a multitude of individuals who equally have something valuable to offer.

How did you first get involved with Black Student Alliance?: My freshman year I went to a couple of the meetings and really enjoyed the organization from its programming to the individuals on the executive board. When the opportunity arose for me to have an entry level E-board position I applied and was offered the position. Then, when the Vice President at the time decided to resign, I really felt I was ready to hold such an important position. Thus, I applied for the position of Vice President and also received that position, which has now led me to become President.

What are some of your duties as president?:

  • Chair the Executive Board and assist with the chairing of General
  • Body Meetings
  • Act as a liaison and spokesperson between the Executive Board and University Staff and administration
  • Maintain communication with other universities and the D.C. community
  • Maintain and supervise the Peer Mentoring Program
  • Chair spring elections for new officers
  • Keep current constitution and its bylaws
  • Respond to BSA emails

What other groups on campus are you involved in?:

SPA Leadership Program, Co-Deputy Director of Inclusion & Outreach

Men of Empowerment and Excellence

How do you balance being an RA with BSA and other organizations?:

The key to balancing my job as an RA and my involvement in student organizations is setting mini deadlines for myself in order to make progress in my task overtime instead of all at once. This allows me to ensure I am giving my maximum effort in my RA role and for the student organizations I am involved in.

What is your favorite event that you have done with BSA?:

Community Cookout on the Quad

What’s your favorite spot on campus?:

Sitting area outside of SIS Building

What’s your favorite place in DC?:

Malcolm X Park

What are your plans for the future?:

Upon graduating from AU I want to get my masters in possibly Special Education then get a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education. I also would like to obtain a law degree. I intend to serve as a teacher for around four years and then go into education reform policy; I am unsure of which avenue I want to take for my education reform policy aspiration. My dream job would be to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Education.
