Whether you’re from DC or not, you probably now know that fall and winter can get pretty cold around here. While snow can be fun with snowmen and canceled classes, these cold months can take a toll on you and your body. Make sure you’re prepared with these survival tips!

1) Layering

Layering is such an easy way to keep warm throughout the day. You won’t have to ever worry about being too cold outside or too hot inside.

2) Socks and Hats

Walking to class only takes a few minutes, but when the degrees start dropping, you’ll need a little more than just a coat to survive those frigid walks. Hats are great way to keep the heat in and can even be a stylish addition to your outfit. Socks are also great under a pair of boots.

3) Food Ideas

A go-to latte can be a quick fix, but some days you’ll need a bit more to keep your energy up throughout the day. Try to have a hot breakfast like oatmeal and something filling and warm like soup or stew for lunch or dinner. Take a break from TDR and make your own meal in the dorm when you’re feeling beat from the weather.

4) Sickness Prevention

In a college dorm, it seems like it’s every man for themselves when trying to stay healthy and away from the latest sickness that’s creeping around the halls. As much as getting the flu shot can be a hassle, it will help make sure that you stay healthy for the winter. Also, as obvious as it is: Make sure you sleep! Sleeping can do wonders to help your body fight off a sickness. You’ll also feel more energized and happy with the days being colder and darker.
