How to Properly Interact with Celebrities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

We all love our artists, athletes, and actors. We crave the juicy dirt about their personal lives to feel connected with them; however, they are just typical people who have jobs that are out of the ordinary. They get their produce from Whole Foods, grab lunch from Chipotle, and get iced caramel macchiatos from Starbucks like us. Whenever you find yourself around a celebrity, be yourself as you would be with anybody.

For half of my life, I have had quite a few run-ins with stars. From being hard at work, eating at a restaurant, or even at my house, I have learned over the years about how to interact with them. You never want to fan-girl because this will create stress and hysteria in the setting you both are in. You also don’t want to be mute around them because then they will think you are shy or a bit stand offish. Sit back and relax; have a conversation with them. Treat them like you would any other person. And most importantly, KEEP EYE CONTACT!

One big no-no when being near celebrities is taking a selfie, picture, or bombarding them with an autograph request. They are always getting attacked with these and if you want to leave an impression on them, don’t be that obnoxious person that’s shoving a camera in their face. Instead, casually talk to them and be polite. Ask them how their day is going or how they are enjoying the city. Just make sure you don’t get too creepy and ask about stuff you have read in a gossip magazine because, most likely, it isn’t true.

Remember, there was a time during these people’s lives when they weren’t on the cover of magazines: treat them that way because they will appreciate it. Any peaceful moment when they don’t have to deal with cameras or screaming fans in their face leaves a lasting impression on them. If you do that, then there is always a chance they might remember you if you cross paths with them again in the future. I mean, that’s what happened to me.
