How To: Capital Bikeshare

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Forget about the fact that we had a freak snow appearance this winter and go outside because Spring is here! We are particularly blessed to be spending Spring in D.C., where the Cherry Blossoms are finally starting to bloom. When the weather gets warm here at Her Campus AU we like any excuse to get outside and explore, and we have found a solution— Capital Bikeshare!

Chances are, by now you’ve seen people riding the red bikes around D.C, or you’ve walked past the station in Tenleytown and wondered how Capital Bikeshare worked. With over 175 locations across Washington D.C., Arlington, VA, and Alexandria, VA, this eco-friendly bike sharing system is the largest in the United States. Whether you want to exercise and get in shape for summer, get in touch with your inner hipster, or simply enjoy being in the fresh air while getting from point a to point b, Capital Bikeshare is the way to go.

This past weekend my friends and I took advantage of the great weather, hopped on Capital Bikeshare bikes and rode through Rock Creek Park, the Georgetown waterfront, and the National Mall. It ended up being one of the most enjoyable afternoons I’ve had since I got to AU in the fall. Riding a bike allows you to see a different side of the city than buses, the metro, or cars offer. Wondering how to do the same?

What you will need: Comfortable clothing and sneakers, a credit or debit card and a GPS or map in case you get lost! It is also very important to note that your card will need to have over $100 on it, because Capital Bikeshare places a $101 security hold on your card for up to ten days after you return the bike.

Step One: Go to any Capital Bikeshare Location to begin. (I chose the one in Tenleytown on Wisconsin, but you may opt to use one closer to your intended destination to make the traveling easier and cost less.)

Step two: Slide your card into the Capital Bikeshare machine and follow all instructions. You’ll have to agree to terms and conditions, enter your phone number and choose what kind of membership you want. Memberships range from a one-day pass to a year.

Step Three: You will receive a four digit code—don’t forget this! With this code you may now choose any of the bikes. Enter your code into the side of the bike rack. Once the light turns green, which means it has processed, you may pull the bike off the rack.

Step Four (if needed): Adjust the seat of your bike for your comfort and safety. (Tip: The seat of the bike should rest at about the height of your hip and your feet should be able to reach the ground)

Last step: You are now free to explore! Whenever you are done replace the bike at any of the Capital Bikeshare locations across D.C. It’s as simple as pushing the bike back onto the bike rack. Once it locks you are good to go and your session is paused for the time being, or finished if you are not planning on riding again during your chosen membership.

Pricing: For complete pricing that includes monthly and annual fees check the Capital Bikeshare website’s pricing page.

If you are just trying it out and looking for weekend enjoyment, the 24 hours membership fee is $7, or a three-day membership is $15. The first 30 minutes is free. The price for the first additional 30 minutes is $2. Anytime between one hour and 1 ½ hours is $6. After this mark the price goes up an additional $8 per 30 minutes.

This being said, using Capital Bikeshare for short-term membership can get pricey, but is an experience that may just inspire you to get a larger membership, which will save you money. If nothing else, it is a great thing to cross off your D.C. bucket list!
