Editors’ Blog: New Year, New Decade, New Ways to Stay Organized

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Not only is January National Get-Organized Month, but with it being a new year and new decade, there is no better time to adopt new habits to keep your life neat. Whether it’s adjusting to a new schedule or decluttering your living space, a systematic lifestyle can help ensure your 2020 is a success.

Get a bomb ass planner

I am such a sucker for a good planner. Walking into Office Depot is like winning the lottery. Keeping your plans and due dates in one place is crucial to a productive lifestyle. It is so important to plan all of your important due dates, fun events with friends, and most importantly, blocking off some time to nap! Planners can also be a time capsule to your year in review- looking back on all your events and assignments and exams and completed to-do lists can bring you a lot of pride and make you feel super accomplished! So whether you love to bullet journal or just make a simple to-do list, a beautiful planner makes all the difference! – Hannah Andress

Write Down ALL of your Assignments

At the start of a fresh semester, one of the best ways to keep on top of everything is to have it all written out in in chronological order. Whether that’s a planner, online calendar or 10 foot-long scroll, having all of your assignments and assessments in one place can be super helpful. And get creative with it! Color-code your classes or the level of importance for each item; add some cute doodles or little notes. Any way you make it, your future self will be thanking you once classes start to pick up! – Carly Elkins

A clean space equals a clean mind

Let’s face it, moving back into your small dorm after being in your spacious home during winter break can be a messy and chaotic transition. Classes have already started which probably means you’re already stressed and can’t even think about unpacking, redecorating, etc. But, if you set aside a Saturday or Sunday to deep clean your room and put everything away at once, then your home away from home will feel much more comfortable. It helps to have a clean space surrounding you so you can really focus and begin to organize other aspects of your life! – Christina McAlister

Color Coding

I’m a sucker for color coding everything from my agenda to class notes to items in my room. All you need is a pack of colored pens to transfer your planner from a jumbled, black-ink list into a rainbow of organized chaos! It’s also a useful tool when taking notes during lectures, as it has been proven that when key information is written in color, you’re brain is more likely to remember it. And let’s be honest, there is nothing more aesthetically pleasing than looking at something that has been organized neatly by color. – Peyton Bigora
