Beauty Buys: When to Save and When to Splurge

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

In a world of endless beauty supply choices, we are often confused on when we should look for a bargain or pull out the big bucks. For this beauty blog post, I’m going to share some words of wisdom to clear your confusion up!

1. Foundation and Cover-Up: Splurge

I have extremely sensitive skin, so any new or low quality products can cause and instant breakout and even redness. In this department, you really do want the highest quality ingredients you can get your hands on. Unfortunately, quality comes with a bigger price tag. Cheaper powder foundations are filled with talc, a type of ingredient that can ultimately cause clogged pores. It’s also very important to make sure there is an SPF in your makeup to protect your skin from UV rays all year.
Try: Clinique’s Redness Solutions Instant Relief Mineral Pressed Power, $32.50 online

2. Blush and Bronzer: Save

Although blush and bronzers care applied to sensitive areas of your skin like cheeks and forehead, you have a protectant layer of minerals underneath from your foundation to set the color. So go ahead and find a bargain at the drugstore near you!
Try: COVERGIRL’s Classic Blush Color, $3. 74 at Target

3. Eye Shadow and Eyeliner: Splurge

Eye shadow and eyeliner are all about pigment, the quality and color saturation of a shadow or liner. Higher priced makeup is often very pigmented and goes on (and stays on) your lids easily. Pigmentation is also important for the color can show up on all skintones.
Try: MAC Eye Shadow and MAC’s Kohl Power Eye Pencil, both $15.00 online

4. Mascara: Save

I have found that most mascara formulas a just about the same — it’s the brush that’s important for application. Drugstores often offer cheaper versions of the same designer brushes. Time after time, Maybelline has received awards for their line of “Great Lash” mascaras. Considering I use it, I can’t help but recommend it to you as well.
Try: Maybelline Great Lash Big, $4.44 at Target

5. Lipstick or Gloss: Depends

I’m the kind of girl who likes to stick to either tinted chapstick or a small swipe of lip gloss, so personally I don’t spend a ton of money on these types of products. If you love to wear lipstick though, I would suggest a higher quality, higher priced product because in the end, the color usually lasts longer and stays on better.
If you are saving, try: e.l.f. Studio Glossy Gloss, $3.00 at Target
If you are spending, try: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense, $19.00 at Sephora

In the end, the choice in makeup is completely up to you and how much money you think is worth it. Consider these guidelines to follow and find your own style for a unique beauty routine!
