AU Alum Erin Phillips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Erin Phillips is an AU alum who graduated with an MA in Arts Management in August, 2013. Erin currently works at Strathmore Performing Arts Center in Bethesda, Maryland in the development department. Fun fact: When she was asked to do an interview, she already knew what Her Campus was– one of her former peers, Gian, was a Campus Cutie!

HCAU: Why did you choose AU?

Erin Phillips: AU’s Arts Management program is well established and highly respected in the field with graduates working in leadership positions across the country. I was also particularly drawn to the experienced faculty, coursework, and endless opportunities for students to engage and learn from others in the field through symposiums, conferences and events. It also helped that the program was in Washington, which is where I wanted to further develop my career and build connections.

HCAU: What did you like most about AU?

EP: I would definitely say the people– my colleagues, classmates and faculty members made the experience so memorable. Second would be the beautiful campus. I miss it most this time of the year with the gorgeous flowers and gardens along with the general feelings of excitement around graduation time.

HCAU: Do you have any favorite places around the campus or the DC area in general?

EP: So many! The benches behind Kay Spiritual Life Center facing Mass Ave., the Battelle Atrium, and of course the Davenport for a Chai tea latte.

HCAU: How did AU affect your life?

EP: I joke that everyone I know in Washington is somehow connected to AU– except I think it might be true! Between being a staff member for six years as well as a graduate student, almost my entire social network somehow circles back to AU. I see it as six degrees of Kevin Bacon, but AU style.

HCAU: What are you doing now?

EP: I am the Manager of Patron Engagement at Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland. As a member of our development team, I work to connect, involve and engage our donors and patrons with Strathmore to further our relationship and hopefully increase their philanthropic support. Breaking into the performing arts is challenging and I believe my education at AU, along with supportive faculty, helped me make the connections I needed to reach this point in my career.

HCAU: Do you have any advice for young women during and/or after they graduate from college?

EP: Although the quality of your work is important, people will always remember how you treated them. Work hard to build relationships with your colleagues. Be kind. Be open-minded. Be a team player. If you ever get bored with the tasks you are assigned, use this as a time to ask for more responsibility. This will help build out your resume and make you more attractive to your next employer. As I progress in my career, I regret not asking to assist with budgeting, as not having this experience eliminated me from being a strong candidate for several positions. Look at position descriptions of where you want to be in five years and gain those skills now. Finally, learn how to do a mail merge, fix a copier paper jam and brew coffee. Your coworkers will love you.

I am currently a Junior at American University, pursuing a Music and Arts Management degree. I love all things music, fashion, and of course, coffee! I am a yogi and a runner. I'm vegetarian, and love to cook all types of food! I keep myself extremely busy, but every once in a while I find some time to let loose and be young. My current internship lets me work many music shows, so I get to do what I love and then write about it!
