Every year millions of Americans watch the president address the nation. This year the State of the Union took place on Feb. 7. This is the one time a year when both Democrats and Republicans, the press and politicians came together to hear Biden speak about banning assault weapons, police brutality, Medicare, social security and bipartisanship.

Since the last State of the Union Address, a lot has happened in the United States, leaving President Joe Biden with a whole lot to address.

Bipartisanship:

One memorable moment of Biden’s State of the Union Address happened after Biden denounced Republicans for sunsetting Medicare and Social Security after five years. In retaliation, Republican Representative, Marjorie Taylor Greene, yelled “liar” while other Republicans simply booed the President.

Although some Republicans booed Biden, the President made it clear that he was open to working across the aisle for the interests of the American people.

“To my Republican friends, if we could work together in the last Congress, there is no reason we can’t work together in this new Congress,” Biden said.

Guests:

Among the Congressmembers and supreme court justices, there were notable guests at the State of the Union address. Tyre Nichols’s parents attended the address, who buried Nichols last week. Biden expressed his support for the family who lost their son at the hands of law enforcement.

“There are no words to describe the heartbreak and grief of losing a child, but imagine what it’s like to lose a child at the hands of the law,” Biden said

Other notable guests included Brandon Tsay, the 26-year-old hero who unarmed the Monterey Park shooter who had killed 11 people. Biden used the 11 deaths and Tsay’s bravery to remind the nation to “ban assault weapons once and for all.”

Biden’s Message:

Biden repeated the phrase “Let’s finish the job,” throughout his speech. Biden made it clear that he is not done with his time in the Oval office. Biden boasted about his success in creating jobs as well as his success with the economy.

“As I stand here tonight, we have created a record 12 million new jobs, more jobs created in two years than any president has ever created in four years,” Biden said.

Biden’s boasts about the economy and job market were aimed at voters. With his first-half of his term completed and his eagerness to “finish the job,” with little time left in his first term, Biden plans on finishing the job.
