American Music Awards: Honorable Mention

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Fall may bring beautiful leaves, colder weather and various pumpkin flavored beverages, however, it also marks a time for large celebration in the music industry. Every year the American Music Awards recognizes and pays tribute to influential artists in a wide array of genres. The 2013 American Music Awards will be broadcasted live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on November 24. Featuring sixteen performances from some of today’s most revered artists, the awards also feature categories ranging from artist of the year to favorite album. Vote for your favorites!

There’s no question that the nominees are undoubtedly talented, but the category of single of the year only has three songs to choose from. In case none of them hit the right note for you, here are some other great songs from 2013 that didn’t make the cut for the awards:

“Speak a Little Louder” by Diane Birch

Diane Birch keeps up her momentum with her new album Speak a Little Louder. Birch’s music never fails to provide a rich fusion of uncensored soulful sound mixed with a sense of hopeful optimism. The title song from the album doesn’t stray from Birch’s impassioned verses accompanied by haunting piano arrangements.

“Heart of Nowhere” (feat. Anna Calvi) by Noah and the Whale

The title song of Noah and the Whale’s new album Heart of Nowhere appeases any desire you had to hear the perfect blend of strings and bass. The band keeps their upbeat, hopeful appeal, while not losing their contemplative lyrics. Heart of Nowhere lets the good vibes role while providing a spin on classic orchestral elements.

“Brave” by Sara Bareilles

Bareilles’ new hit song “Brave” is the perfect pick-me-up for anyone who needs a confidence booster. Her motto: “I wanna see you be brave” speaks to the entire album’s enthusiastic fervor. Bareilles moves past her old hits such as “Love Song” and “Uncharted”and exchanges them for a new found assurance as seen in “Brave”‘s upbeat message of empowerment.

“Counting Stars” by One Republic

“Counting Stars” is the type of song that breaks down any barrier between emotional categorization. Whether it’s working out, cleaning, or weeping your eyes out, this song creeps its way into the background of your counscious. The song’s thoughtful repetition paired with a sense of idealism reminds us why we fell in love with One Republic in the first place.

“Best Day of My Life” by American Authors

Considered one of this summer’s most beloved anthems, the song “Best Day of My Life” speaks with an innate sense of care-free resilience that just makes you smile. The song will inevitably put you in a good mood and turn your ear to the rest of the American Authors’ album.
