8 Reasons You Should See The Duff

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

1. It’s based off a book and the author wrote it her senior year of high school

Kody Keplinger wrote the book after she heard what the term Duff meant (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). She now lives in NYC as a full-time writer and sometimes teaches writing workshops.

2. Mae Whitman

Besides killing it in “Parenthood” and “Arrested Development”, Mae Whitman’s role in “The Duff’ is perfection. For example, above, she’s not even apologizing for wearing her pajamas to school and why should she? Yoga pants and PJs were and still are every girl’s savior for their 8:55s and maybe 1:10 p.m. classes too…

3. We all want to perfect Bella Thorne’s smolder

How does she do it? She looks innocent and angry at the same time. Even the hair it perfectly bouncing with her strut. At some point or another, every girl has tried to make this exact walk across the Quad in their best outfit, don’t even try to say otherwise.

4. Allison Janney

How can anyone hate a movie with this woman in it? Take this gif from the movie as an example; why does she have a glass of wine while she’s mowing clothes? Why does that look like a great form of therapy? One can only imagine the fabulous one-liners this lady has in this movie and that this gif is only a piece of her comedic geniusness.

5. Ken Jeong

If only Ken Jeong could be a teacher in real life (fun fact: he’s actually a licensed physician in California) because then everyone would be able to tolerate high school. Jeong is one of the favorite teachers as well as a former Duff, so I’m sure his advice will only be as hilarious as imagined.

6.(Shirtless) Robbie Amell

Regardless if you are attracted to men, his “trick” in this gif is impressive. If that alone does not get him an oscar nomination next year, I’m not sure what would. Anyway, Amell’s performance as the jock, ladies man, and person in charge of “De-Duffing” Mae Whitman’s character is everything you want with his brutal honesty and charming smile.

7. The message of the movie: We’ve all felt like a Duff

A lot of people have been turned off by this movie simply because of the title and what a Duff means, but there’s more to it. Being a Duff isn’t strictly based on appearances. No matter who you are or what you look like, there will always be someone better at something than you are, so just be the best version of yourself because that’s all anyone should be. As corny as that may be, it’s an important reminder that everyone has something that makes them feel like the Duff.
