5 Safe and Effective Non-Animal Tested Beauty Products

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Being a girl means getting to play with hundreds of different beauty products – from make-up that best fits you, to skin care for baby soft skin, to trendy nail polish colors. But how much do we really know about the proccessing of the beauty products we purchse on a monthly basis? Did you know that the U.S. does not require cosmetics to be tested on animals to demonstrate that they are safe, yet there are still hundreds of beauty and health companies that test on animals anyway? These types of tests can include skin and eye irritation tests, repeated “lethal dose” tests, and the force feeding of chemical substances over long periods of time – yikes! So how can you have save bunnies in danger of these gruesome tests? By just a few changes on your next trip to CVS, Target or Sephora; just look out for labels on the back of beauty products that say “This Product Not Tested On Animals.” Here are 5 beauty products you may already be using that DO test on animals – but no worries, there are also some safer alternatives that DON’T test on animals, that are PETA approved, work just as well and are not hurting any bunnies!

1. Almay (Revlon) – DO TEST

Yes, unfortunately PETA has confirmed that this widely popular drugstore make-up brand test on animals. But, this isn’t the only make-up brand out there! Next time you stop by Sephora, try out Urban Decay cosmetics; long lasting, effective and completely safe! It’s a little pricier, but totally worth it!

  • Alternative – Urban Decay (L’Oreal) – DON’T TEST

2. ChapStick (Pfizer) – DO TEST

This very famous chapstick brand that has been around for years does in fact test its products on animals. But perhaps this brand is already being outshined by Eos, the highly popular and on the rise lip balm brand that is known as the “egg.” Definitely try an Eos next time; they’re reasonably priced, found at every drugstore and available in great flavors!

  • Alternative – Eos – DONT TEST

3. Clean and Clear (Johnson & Johnson) – DO TEST

This may come as a shock to many, but every single product made by the Johnson & Johnson (which is almost every health care product you find on the shelves) IS tested on animals. But here’s a great alternative that is also widely known and has been on the shelves for many years – Burt’s Bees. Although most well known for their chapsticks and lip balms, they also have a skin care line with a wide variety of products ranging from gentle face washes to fragrant body washes to relaxing bath crystals. They have great prices and the best frangrances for all of their products!

  • Alternative – Burt’s Bees – DON’T TEST

4. Dove (Unilever Global) – DO TEST

This popular and well known brand also tests on animals, but also isn’t the only brand out there for efficient and safe body/skin care. Try using Yes To- a brand that is on the rise in today’s market, and even has a fun and encouraging title on almost every product. “Yes To Carrots! Yes To Tomatoes!” are just 2 of the brand titles on their products, using natural substances to create their skin care products, along with actual fruit and vegetable extracts. Say “Yes!” to this product and try it for yourself!

Alternative – Yes To! – DON’T TEST

5. Mac Cosmetics – DO TEST

Although we all love these products, being that they are great quality (although actually very pricey) and are endorsed by huge celebrities, the bunnies should come first, right? NYX cosmetics are a great alternative to using Mac products, and a lot more affordable!

  • Alternative – NYX Cosmetics – DON’T TEST
