The 10 Best Things About Autumn

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Ladies, it is time to put those bikinis and flip-flops away. The leaves are changing color and the temperature is dropping. It’s time to say goodbye to summertime sun and hello to the crisp autumn breeze. The change of season calls for a list of new activities and a new wardrobe. Here’s a list of the best things about Autumn:

Sweater Weather: Don’t deny it, girls. We know you love sweaters. You can always rock your boyfriend’s hoodie that smells like him or start wearing those knits you’ve kept in your closet for a while now. Whether you wear them with long pants or shorts, it still looks cute! As Spongebob once sang, “the best time to wear a stripe sweater is all the time” (at least during the fall!).

Apples, and Pumpkins, and Cinnamon, oh my! Now that strawberries and watermelons are out of season, these bad boys are stocked up in our shelves. It’s all about the pumpkin pies, apple tarts, and cinnamon buns. Even Bath & Body Works hopped on this season’s band wagon with their Autumn scents. Starbucks pours out the pumpkin spice for customers and don’t tell me you aren’t craving a cinnamon this year. Fall just smells really good.

Daylight Savin’: We can all thank our boy, Ben Franklin, for ushering the creation of Daylight Savings Time. We have it twice a year, once in Spring and the other in Fall. The Spring one sucks because we lose an hour of sleep. The Fall one is a gift from the college gods. It gives everyone an extra hour to sleep. So, don’t press snooze so quickly on Sunday, November 2nd.

Scaring People and Giving Thanks: Two great holidays happen in the Fall. We have Halloween and Thanksgiving. Everyone loves Halloween. Who doesn’t love free candy? You’re never too old to go tick-or-treating and getting dressed up is so much fun! As for Thanksgiving, who doesn’t love food? Maybe if some of you are lucky enough, you’re able to go back home and spend it with family.

International Balloon Fiesta: This probably isn’t something you’ve heard of, but every year there is an International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s held for nine days in early October and contains 750 hot air balloons. Yeah, those tiny helium balloons just don’t do it for you anymore. Add this to your bucket list.

Boots on Boots: With the cold weather approaching, you can finally whip out those riding boots you’ve been itching to wear all Summer.  Fall is the perfect time to break out all your boots from your closet.  You can match it with dresses, jeans, skirts, and everything else. Your life is always on point if you’ve always got your trusty boots.

It’s Cuddle Season!: Well if you have a significant other, then lucky you.  The cold weather means wanted body contact.  Sometimes it’s too sweaty to be holding hands in the Summer, but that’s not a problem in the Fall. Body contact will always just feel a lot better when you’re colder. So go out, grab your significant other, and do some hand holding.  As for the rest of you, single ladies, fret not; that’s exactly why sweaters are awesome.

No Shave, No Problem: With Autumn, we start to pack our shorts away. When we do that, we bring out our long jeans and sweats. And the best thing ever is that we don’t have to worry too much about shaving our legs. We all know how much of a struggle it was to constantly shave your legs in the Summer. Now, we can just let it grow and not even worry a bit.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: There’s nothing better than spreading the knowledge and hope around. And as women, we should all work hard to find a cure and educate those who don’t know about breast cancer.  So go wear the pinkest outfit you have and strut down the streets like you own the place. Nothing feels better than feeling like you can do anything you set your mind on.

Hot Hot Hot Drinks: Cool mornings are not complete without a nice hot beverage.  Nothing tastes better than that nice vanilla latte as you trudge your way to a Monday 8:55 AM class. Imagine drinking Chai tea while you’re curled up on your favorite blanket and watching reruns of “How I Met You Mother.” Thinking about it makes you all warm and fuzzy on the inside too.
