Some types of Psychology & Psychologists (Part 2)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albizu chapter.

And we’re back with the second part of our types of psychology & psychologists article! (If you want to read the first one, click here)  Fortunately for us, there are many ways to use our psychology degree and make it fit into our interests.  Psychology is a multifaceted field and it’s increasingly finding itself being used and called upon in many different environments.  So, without further ado, here are some of the most interesting subfields in psychology:

Is fashion your livelihood?

Yes, you read right!  There is such a thing as fashion psychology!  Fashion psychologists apply psychological theory to fashion.  What they want to know is why people wear what they wear and how their clothes affect other people’s thoughts and emotions.  Whether that person with their clothes, exudes power, intelligence, beauty or foolishness, they want to know it all.  Also, who doesn’t feel good when they’re wearing a top-notch outfit?  Helping people find themselves through their fashion sense seems pretty logical to me.

Interested in the men and women who fight for their countries?

Then try military psychology.  These psychologists focus on treating people who have served or are serving in the armed forces.  Many of these men and women are subjected and have been exposed to difficult and stressful situations such as bombings, torture, shootings, injustice and scarcity.  Some of them even develop PTSD and suffer from nightmares and flashbacks to their times in war.  Psychologists must help these people adjust to their setting in the military as well as adjust to their life back home and treat their stress and trauma.

Do you want to help the older population?

Try geropsychology!  Our population of older adults is increasing with the eradication of many illnesses and the modernization of medical treatments, but it is also finding itself confronting different illnesses that usually appear in older age such as Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.  The elderly also go through a stage in life that is characterized by a lot of loss.  Loss of physical and mental abilities, loss of older friends & family members, and retirement.  It is up to geropsychologists to help these people find a new outlook in their life and ways to compensate for the changes in their own body.

If you’re into technology & software…

Then how about engineering psychology?  Engineering psychologists focus on the relationship between humans and the products and technology they use every day.  Their job is to understand, design and develop new software and ways to utilize those devices.  The most important thing is to design technology that’s safe and easy to use in our modern day-to-day tasks.

Of course, there are many more options to choose from when studying psychology.  Be on the lookout for the next part!
