My Halloween Movie Picks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

Happy spooky szn everyone!

If anyone’s feeling like watching some scary movies to start off Halloween month, then you’re in luck! Here are some of my fave horror movies I watch during Halloween (or even, when I’m in the mood to get spooked).

HERE IT GOES!

  1. Coraline (2009)

The movie is about a young girl named Coraline who just moved to a new home in a new town with her family. She was so bored of the house in general that when she lurked around the new house she finds a small door which turns out, is a portal to a different world. She meets Other Mother and Other Father, which coincidentally, looked like her actual parents but with button eyes. The ‘Other World’ is a dream come true to Coraline’s eyes right until the Other Mother asks a thorny request.

WATCH IT FOR:

  • Great stop motion! Nothing can go wrong with stop motion!!
  • Amazing storyline

  1. Monster House (2006)

The title says it all. Monster House is about 3 kids named DJ, Chowder, and Jenny trying to convince adults that Nebbercracker’s house, DJ’s neighbor, is a living creature that takes in children, LITERALLY. With no adult believing what they’re saying, it is only up to the trio to try and stop this creature before it takes in more children.

WATCH IT FOR:

  • THE LAUGHS. It has great moments where you forget you’re watching a children-horror movie.
  • You won’t get bored over the story.
  • This movie deserves a lot more than it has gotten back then. GIVE IT MORE HYPE AND WATCH IT ON NETFLIX!

  1. Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring is based on a true story about two well-known demonologists or, paranormal investigators, named Ed and Lorraine Warren who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse in Harrisville. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most horrifying case of their lives.

WATCH IT FOR:

  • The Conjuring universe- following the cases of the Warrens is really interesting!
  • Actual scares without typical jump scares…. It can scar you…

  1. Get Out (2017)

Chris and his girlfriend reached the milestone where you get to meet the parents, so they both went for a getaway to meet the girlfriend’s parents at their hometown. Chris finds the family and the home real strange and found many disturbing discoveries in the end.

WATCH IT FOR:

  • Clever satire
  • A hot take on addressing racism
  • Socially aware + horror movie? We stan

  1. The Babadook (2014)

A single mother named Amelia, still getting over the violent death of her husband, battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

WATCH IT FOR:

  • To scare your ass off (LITERALLY…. I’m still scared of it)
  • Psychological horror (my fave genre)
  • It’s like any typical boogeyman story, but scarier

There you have it, my fave horror movies to watch for Halloween! Overall, my personal favorites are usually leaning towards psychological and children horror movies, but I enjoy any that can really scare me to the bone without having to force a jump scare all the time.

Until then, happy (early) Halloween everyone!
