Jerlisa Fontaine: Associate Director of Marketing of SA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

What is your major, year, and expected graduation date?

I’m a Human-Bio major on a pre-med track, and a business minor.  I’ll be graduating in May 2018.

You’re involved in SA Marketing, what do you do with that?

I serve as the associate director of marketing of the Student Association.  My responsibilities lie with assisting the director of marketing in overseeing the interns, as well as assuring that the department is advocating for the student groups, particularly through media and promotions for their events, as well as SA events.

Ever find yourself stressed?

I wouldn’t say that SA is stressful, but being involved in other groups on campus such as MAPS(The Minority Association of Pre-medical Students), NAACP, being an RA, and also working at the dining hall, there’s definitely never a dull day.  However, these are all things that I’m passionate about.

How was hosting the SA Block Party?

I was excited about the opportunity!  I was able to work with my friend Saben, and I’ve known him since last year, so it was fun to work together with people I’ve worked with in the past.  The Block Party was great; it helped to show school spirit through various groups and was an awesome experience.

Why would you recommend people getting involved in the Student Association?

Interning for SA for me personally brought about enhancement to my communication skills.  Within SA, I’m surrounded by so many different people, and different is good.  You learn new things from everyone! I would definitely recommend people to get involved- thanks to SA, so many doors have been opened up for me.

Most people in SA Marketing have majors like communications or journalism, so my bio major catches everyone off guard, but it’s also able to set me apart- in a good way.  I’ve been able to network, and get research opportunities, so me being unique is paying off.

What do your non-school related hobbies consist of?

I love to sing!  When I’m back home in the city, I look for volunteer work in the nursing home.

What are some of your highlights being a UAlbany student?

Academically- As a bio major, you have professors that expect you to know everything, so the challenge with them pushes me to strive to do better.

I enjoyed homecoming & Parkfest- being able to go to a concert through the school was a highlight, it was my first concert!

Socially- it worked out well for me, I got to go to many events I wasn’t exposed to.  Meeting many people, and the block party.

I know it’s early- but, what do you plan to do once you graduate?

Career wise, I want to be an OBGYN, but outside of work,  I want to find an org that allows me to stay connected with the community that in as well, because I definitely value that.
