Fear. A word that means different things to different people. When I think of fear the first thing that comes to mind is missed opportunities. I often think of the times I let a scary appearence, self doubt, and any other little thing that would cause a chink in my armor caused me not to pursue an opportunity. Yes spiders are scary and the thought of monsters terrifies me, but the thought of failure truly frightens me.

For some reason it is easy to say, “Get over it’ or “You got this,” to others that may be feeling nervous about taking a risk in life. It gets much harder when you have to convince yourself the same. I have decided to make a personal promise to myself to be more couragous in life. This is something I think is extremely important, especially for college women. I have seen so many female students be told, “Maybe you should switch your major,” or “Your smart for a women.” Constantly hearing things like this does nothing to boost the want to overcome your fears, but this is why you must surround yourself with a strong support system.

My friends and family are constantly reminding me just how brave and strong I truly am. All this is to say, things in life will be scary. Fear is a natural human emotion, but how we conquer our fears and use them to our advantage is what will determine the many decisions we make in life.

My name is Daria and I am currently a junior at SUNY Albany. I am studying biology and hope to, one day, become a nurse practitioner.
