Dear Issa Rae

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

Most people who know me personally, know that I’m very simple when it comes to entertainment.  Give me wifi, and Youtube, and I’m set for the day.

When it comes to television shows and movies, it’s unlikely for me to start and finish a new series or movie, or if I do start to watch, I get tired of it, or simply can’t keep up.  So no Chike (my older brother,) I won’t go with you to watch the latest Marvel movie, (unless you’re ready for 40 questions throughout).

There’s a bunch of series that I’ve stopped watching, simply because I didn’t have the time, or just figured it wasn’t the show for me.  This includes Scandal, The Walking Dead, and most recently Breaking Bad.  I didn’t make it past the pilot episode.

Everything changed this summer.

A bunch of people suggested the show ‘Insecure,’ to me.

Since I have a Twitter, this was something that I saw often.  References to the show were made on my timeline all the time, and one night, I decided to give it a try.

I downloaded HBO Go (the 30-day free trial version, of course.  I’m balling on a budget,) and decided to give the show a try.

The next thing I knew, it was around 330am, and I realized that I had watched the entire first season.

I was shocked.  I had fallen in love with a show for the first time in a long time, and what I loved the most about it was how relatable it was to me.

There’s something about seeing successful women of color in a tv show, just playing the roles of everyday people.  It was so effortless, and now I have (had, season 2 ended last week, and I’m so sad).  I see a little bit of myself in each of the characters, it’s great!

To Issa, thank you for being the creative mastermind behind this show.  Thank you for finally giving me something that I don’t get tired of watching, something that I can relate to.  Something that makes me realize that it’s okay to be awkward, insecure, and a black girl- all at the same time.

If you haven’t watched this show, please do.  Coming from me, someone who rarely watches series, I promise that you’ll be satisfied!

After you do, let me know if you’re #TeamIssa, or #TeamLawrence, I’m always up for a good debate.
