15 Signs You’re A Journalism Major at UAlbany

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Albany chapter.

Well we all know that Journalism students are the best students on this campus. We know it all, we are extremely talented and although it stresses us out we love our major.

Here are 15 signs you’re a journalism major at UAlbany.

1. The Albany Student Press (ASP) Keeps Asking You To Write For Them

The ASP is celebrating their 100th birthday next year and they have gone through a makeover period. Both their newspaper and website have a new look. They’re always looking for writers, especially people who are Journalism majors and minors. So of course they come to your classes and ask you to write for them. You should because not only does it look good on your resume, but it’s a great experience.

2. You Have The Same People In Your Classes

You’ve probably seen the same familiar faces in your classes since Freshman year. It’s a good thing though because you all, for the most part, are close and become friends so going to class is actually fun and more interactive.

3. You Know Things That No One Else Does

Ask your friends what “serif” and “sans-serif” typeface is and they won’t know, but of course you know because you’ve taken Prof. Palmer’s classes and he’s drilled those terms in your head.

4. You’ve Had A Nervous Breakdown Using Adobe InDesign & Photoshop

When you first learned to use the program you wanted to pull your hair out and now that you’re better at it, you still want to pull your hair out. Those tiny mistakes that are made can mess up your entire project and you may even have to start all over again! It’s okay, it’s all worth it in the end right?

5. You’ve Had Enough of WordPress

You’ve probably made three wordpress websites for your classes so far, but don’t worry you’ll be making more. Although WordPress is probably the easiest website design tool, it really gets annoying.

6. You Have a Ton of Magazines and Newspapers in Your Room

You wouldn’t be a journalism major at any school if this wasn’t your truth. It just happens. We love to be in the know.

7. The AP Stylebook Is Your Bible

Follow it or you’ll fail…That is all.

8. You’ve Had Class In The Science Library

Those computer labs in the SL are our best friends. The first time you looked at your schedule you probaby thought, “SL, But why?” Now you’re used to it.

9. Your Class Has Met in the Interactive Media Center (IMC)

We’ve all met in the IMC for a tour and a tutorial on how to use the microphones, cameras and other equipment. We’ve also learned how to properly take out what we want.

10. You’ve Thought You Had Carpal Tunnel

After a long night of typing three articles, your joints hurt and you cry out carpal tunnel and you want to give up because you don’t want to be 30 and can’t properly use your hands because what’s the point.

11. Writing Other Papers Takes No Time

You’re an expert at writing so when you decide to take a class in another subject, you fly through that paper AND you ace it!

12. You’re Always In The Know

As a journalism major it is very necessary that you know what is going on in the news, but the majors at UAlbany know about everything! When the next party is, who will be coming for Parkfest, how all of our sports teams are doing, etc.

13. You Have A Twitter

UAlbany journalism professors love telling their students that they need a Twitter account. If you already have a Twitter account you have to tell your followers to ignore some of your tweets because you’ll be tweeting something for class. *insert eye roll emoji here*

14. Three Hour Classes Actually Fly By

Three hour classes in the journalism major go by so fast as opposed to the classes in other subjects. Most of the time they let us out early anyway.

15. You Have A Love/Hate Relationship With the Major…

But you wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Tabia is a senior at SUNY University at Albany. She is studying Journalism with a minor in History and Africana Studies. She would love a career in Journalism as an Arts and Entertainment Reporter. She wants to go to graduate school in her native New York City or Boston, Massachusetts. In her spare time she likes to dance, sing, watch new shows on Hulu and read Her Campus articles.
