What it Really Means to “Pay for Your Friends”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.

When thinking about what it means to be a part of a sorority, three words come to mind: memories, sincerity, and forever. When I reflect back on these last two years as a sorority member, I am so grateful for the experiences I have made and the friends I have gained along the way.

When talking about Greek life, people always ask about the cost and what all of that entails when considering joining a sorority. I know for me personally, the cost was something I was worried about and I had a lot of questions and concerns when it came to joining. At the end of the day, not only have I enjoyed the benefits of being a part of my sorority, but the ultimate prize of all has been the friends I have made.

A lot of times when considering joining a sorority, people use the phrase “paying for friends.” In a way, joining a sorority and paying the dues are for the purpose of making friends, which one could do without becoming a sorority member. While I understand the cost is a big factor in why people decide to or to not rush, I have found the phrase “paying for your friends” to be far from true. The memories, values, and laughs I’ve had just in the past two years alone has been enough to last a lifetime. As cheesy as that sounds, it could not be more true. Not only have these friendships changed and shaped my life, but have also helped me grow in so many personal aspects. It has showed me the importance of a balanced life and what it means to be a good student. It has helped me build a resume I am proud of by all the opportunities that are offered and that I have learned from. Joining has not only helped me create a community of people which I know will last long and be strong for the rest of my life, but has also empowered me to be the most authentic version of myself. I think it is so amazing that I am a part of a group of strong women who empower and inspire me every single day.

In the end, Greek life has given me amazing opportunities to foster some genuine relationships and develop an inclusive community that has made me feel like home away from home. Whether you are currently considering becoming a member of a sorority or trying to weigh the pros and cons, I hope that my experience has help shed some genuine light on what being in a sorority means to me and my friends, and how it has changed my life in the most positive ways.
