Oh Lorde! How I love her dearly. From Pure Heroine to Melodrama, Lorde never disappoints…except maybe if you watched the 2017 VMA’s.

Apparently she did disappoint a few people with her performance. She received criticism from a decent amount of people on social media about how she just “danced around” instead of singing. How DARE she create a visual performance! How DARE she do something that makes her happy and outside the box! She has made it clear that she is not your “normal” artist. But that would be pretty boring if everyone performed the same way, right? No artist really is “normal” because there are many definitions to normal.

The night of her performance she tweeted “you can’t tell in these pictures but I have the flu so bad I needed an IV #showgoeson #cutelittleproppedupcorpse”. This means that home-girl performed, jumped around on stage, and danced her heart out while being sick. I don’t even want to move, let alone dance, when I am sick yet you have Miss Lorde out here like the only cure for her flu is more hip dance moves.

She is an icon! An icon that not a lot of people pay attention to, let alone understand. I want you, if you haven’t listened to her new album, to listen to it. Really listen to it. It’s a story and the album takes place the night of a party. So yes, her performance may have been a little “off the wall,” but she performed with a purpose and didn’t really give a damn if she was looked at strange. She was telling a story.

There is just something so pure in her songwriting and her performances. I describe it as going to your local music scene and watching your friend perform. She is so genuine that for a split second, you forget about all the bad and just let your freak flag fly. Be like Lorde, learn from Lorde. You’ll learn to live more freely.
