While in a pandemic, clearly we are stuck in our homes or dorms, so I feel like it is important to find new things to do at home. This could be writing, reading, or listening to music. For me, I have been trying to watch new things. In particular, I discovered a new anime that I saw a lot of my mutuals on Twitter talking about: “Jujustu Kaisen.”

The anime released back in October and for months I told myself that I’d check it out eventually, but never got to it; however, whenever I scrolled through my social media I only saw the characters, and I knew I had to finally watch. The fear of missing out was seriously getting to me at this point. “Jujutsu Kaisen” is a shounen anime, meaning “few years,” which refers roughly to stories surrounding a young male hero protagonist placed in a plot focused around action and adventure. “Naruto,” “One Piece,” and “Dragon Ball Z” are examples of some. “Jujutsu Kaisen” follows the story of fifteen year old Yuuji Itadori as he joins a school of jujutsu sorcerers in order to learn to kill cursed spirits, especially the most famous, Ryomen Sukuna. To add to that, Yuuji also is Sukuna’s vessel as he ingests part of him in order to save his friends. With Sukuna’s powers in him, Yuuji uses this strength to protect the people who he loves, as that was what he promised his dying grandfather.

The anime is very multidimensional and really does draw the audience in with its unique plot in addition to its beautiful art style. You would think with such a serious storyline the show would be very dark, but it’s quite the opposite. There’s a lot of humor and lovable characters and the progression of the plot is done very well. You learn a lot about friendship, love, and loss, and the characters all act very realistically given their circumstances. There’s been times I’ve cried along with the characters, and I always laugh when they do. This is an anime that really is one of a kind and manages to deal with such a complex plot in a great way.

I started watching the anime when I was in a bad place mentally, and the episodes really did manage to make me laugh and put a smile on my face. If you are trying to get into anime, you need a new anime to start, or you just need some new media to watch, I definitely recommend watching “Jujutsu Kaisen.” You will definitely become attached to it; you won’t regret it!
