What the Heck is Dermaplaning??

Dermaplaning has been all over the internet lately, so I decided to do my research.

Dermaplaning is a trendy way to exfoliate. The procedure consists of using a 10-gauge scalpel to gently scrape away the dead skin cells and peach fuzz on the surface of the face.

That’s right! I shaved my face— for science! Well, for Her Campus.

Because I’m a college student and I can’t shell out money for spa treatments on the reg, I went to Amazon (using Amazon smile to support ACLU, naturally) and found these amazing contraptions! Twinkle razors, originally designed for eyebrows.

Please do not attempt to dermaplane your own face with a scalpel. Bad idea. But, I figured I could handle these friendly little razors, so I set off on my experiment!

First, you wash and dry your face. Your skin needs to be dry for the procedure to work. Next, you take your razor and, with it parallel to your skin, scrape in short, upward strokes. Be careful not to get too close to your eyebrows or your hairline. Remember—it is a razor, after all.

Let me tell you, my skin felt SO soft when I was done. And the best part, it was totally painless. My acne scars immediately appeared faded, and my foundation applied super smoothly.

I have super sensitive skin, I break out any time I even think about waxing my face (Zit Mustache or Regular Mustache— the Italian girls’ Catch 22), so I was nervous about breaking out. I didn’t. The only reaction I noticed was that my skin was a little drier the next few days. Nothing a good moisturizer couldn’t fix.

Overall, I would give DIY dermaplaning a 9.5/10
