Ways to Spot a Theatre Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Ahh Theatre Majors…

Night before memorizers extraordinaire,

Doers of vocal warm ups in line at the grocery store,

Receivers of the “And what exactly do you plan to do with that?”,

You can spot them from a mile away.

  1. Wearing all black.

I’ll let you in on a little secret; at Adelphi, Freshman Acting majors have to wear their “blacks” to class. It’s part of the gig. We also wear all black when working tech on a show.

We also wear all black whenever we want to look fierce af *snaps*

  1. Walking in Huge Groups

We can’t help it! It’s not that we are afraid to go places on our own, it’s just that we all start and get out of class at the same time. And you know we are headed to The Underground in between our nine AM Theatre History class.

  1. Consuming massive amounts of caffeine

*See above*

Okay, so maybe this one isn’t Theatre specific; almost all college students need that boost to get through their busy days. But when you have class and work and rehearsal on top of learning monologues, sometimes you need that kick. Whether it’s coffee, or (a lot of the time) tea, you need a little pick-me-up.

  1. Our Faces are Covered in Stage Makeup

We actually have to take class to learn all the different looks. We all have the exact same kit. It’s kind of a cult. And sometimes it can be a little difficult to get it all off before running to the UC… #SorryNotSorry

Plus, with all this practice you know our eyeliner is on fleek when we go out on weekends.

5. We’re not talking to ourselves… it’s called a monologue

We need them for auditions; we need them for class. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re part  of every actor’s life. And yours too, if you live next door (sorry Earle Hall).

That being said, don’t assume we all like the same things. Don’t assume we are always obnoxious or extroverted. And definitely don’t think you know everything about us just because you know our major.

But one thing you can be sure of is that we love theatre because theatre is home.
