Want Some Good News? Listen to Megan Thee Stallion’s Debut Album, “Good News”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

In the summer of 2019, society was blessed with the artistry of the Houston native rapper, Megan Thee Stallion. While an artist’s first taste of prominent exposure would gradually grow to their peak, that wasn’t the case for Megan. Her fiery bars, fierce self-confidence, and affirmations on the importance of loving yourself appealed to the masses that allowed for additional praises from mainstream media. Need proof? Megan is one of the judges on the HBO Max voguing competition show, Legendary. Not only this, but in April, Megan dropped the Savage Remix with the queen of music herself, BEYONCÉ. Music enthusiasts know that you have to be appealing to Beyoncé in order to work with her. With all of this, fans were left wondering just when Megan would drop her debut album; this all changed on November 20, 2020.

“What’s New” is your new self-empowerment anthem; the fast and upbeat melody paired with Megan’s sass instantly makes you feel like that person who doesn’t care of what other people have to say about you.-their opinions just go in one ear and out the other. The lyrics, “Tell a hater, ‘F–k you’ / They keep comin’, tellin’ me these b——-s mad, what’s new / All this ice around my neck got me feelin’ too cool” really make you realize that your haters are just your motivators, pushing you to succeed  in life.

The title and intro of “Work That” makes the song appear to be just a twerking anthem, but as you listen, you realize it has more sexual elements as well. Once the pandemic is over and clubs reopen, this song will definitely have people getting down-it’s very upbeat and just makes you want to move. Need proof? Let me just leave these lyrics here: “He like it when I work that, twerk that, serve that / And ride it like a rodeo.”

Megan adds some more Southern flair by tagging along with the City Girls in “Do It On The Tip”. The song embodies being confident in yourself and not caring about what haters say, and it’s these elements that make you desirable to other people. On top of that, it allows you to know your worth when trying to find the right partner. Megan sets this straight in the beginning when she states, “They say I got the skills, they say I got the look / I got so many bars, they puttin’ money on my books, hey”, “He got you looking stupid you wanna argue with me? / I got a couple bitches mad ‘cause I don’t f—k with them no more / But since you so unbothered, what you speaking on me for?”, and “Okay now do it for a real b—-h, buy a b—-h a real bag”.

In this album, Megan really proved that she is here to stay-nothing could ever take her down! She gave her all and if she were to perform the whole album at a concert, she would get a standing ovation-people would even be throwing roses towards her with how magnificent the album is. Give Good News a listen on whatever music providing platform you use.
