If you look closely you can see all the girls on campus getting ready for sorority recruitment. OK, maybe not all the girls, but there are definitely a lot! Sorority members are working hard to make sure they pull off the best recruitment, while unaffiliated girls are debating whether or not they want to go through. If you’re not sure about going through recruitment, I think you should! Yes, I am in a sorority, but I’m not going to push you to go Greek if you don’t want. However, it wouldn’t hurt to try. If it’s not for you then you at least you know you tried! Have I convinced you yet? Well whether I did or didn’t, here are some tips to keep in mind when going through recruitment!
1. Drink water!
It’s a little weird that this is number one on the list, but it is so so important to stay hydrated. You are there to make a great impression and that’s a little hard when you’re dehydrated. There have been cases when girls pass out because rooms may be too hot. Don’t be scared though! Just make sure to keep drinking water when you can. You’ll also be doing a lot of talking and you don’t want you throat to get dry and your voice to get hoarse.
2. Keep an open mind
Every organization has positive and negative rumors/stereotypes. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!! Don’t go in assuming you know each organization because of rumors you’ve heard. You’ll never know what the organization is truly known for or what the work towards if you don’t clear your mind and give them a chance. It’ll also be a lot easier to talk with the sisters of an organization if you’re not thinking about what you’ve heard.
3. Don’t get uspet over what happens
If you go into recruitment only wanting one specific organization, odds are you won’t get it. You’ll hear this a million times during recruitment, but you end up where you are meant to be. You may not know it or feel it automatically, but you’ll grow to realize that everything works out the way it’s suppsed to. Moping over not getting your top organization isn’t going to help you. It’s a very emotional time, but you have to remember why you want to go Greek.
4. Talk to your Recruitment Counselors
During recruitment you’ll meet guides called Recruitment Counselors/Rho Gammas (your school may have a different name for it). These are Greek members that have unaffiliated from their organization to help you during recruitment. If you have any questions or concerns or anything, talk to your Recruitment Counselor! Whether you want to grab a bite to eat or a shoulder to cry on, your Recruitment Counselors are your people to go to!
5. Be memorable
Sorority members meet countless of girls during recruitment. Make sure to make yourself memorable so they can remember you after your rounds! You don’t have to be in their face, but tell a funny story or an interesting fact about yourself. Be genuine and talk about things that you care about or things that you are looking for in an organization. DO NOT ask about parties or tell stories about nights when you were so drunk you blacked out. There is a time and place for everything and recruitment isn’t the place for that.
6. “Just keep swimming!”
I have to quote my girl Dory for this because the truth is you have to keep going! If you don’t get invited back to an organization that you really wanted, you should still finish the process to see where you end up. If you don’t get invited back to any organization, don’t worry! It happens more often than you think. You can always go through recruitment again. It’s OK to go through recruitment again even if you’re a sophomore or junior. Don’t give up so easily!
7. Have fun!
Personally, I loved recruitment. I know there are people who dread it because it’s nervewracking and you’re meeting so many girls in one day. Recruitment is what you make of it, so make it fun! Look at it as a way to meet new people and to dress up a little nicer than usual. Regardless of what happens you’ll want to look back on it as a positive and fun time!
