After an agonizingly long wait (and subsequent emotional turmoil) One Direction’s latest album, Made in the A.M., is finally available to the public! The album dropped on Firday, November 13th, and like most Directioners, we eagerly downloaded our pre-orders on iTunes, sat in our rooms, and listened intently to all 17 tracks in order. That being said, some of those tracks were better than others. All in all, we think the first Zayn-less album (sobs) is very experimental, with each song provoking a different feeling and having a very unique sound.
The British foursome have tweeted us sneak peeks at a few songs over the last week, and we’ve had a few music videos released for the album’s current singles. (Want to cry because of One Direction’s perfection? Watch the music video for Perfect.) But despite already knowing a few of the songs and having an idea about this album’s sound, we were surprised by several tracks. Here are a few of our absolute favorites, and a few of our least favorites, that make our list of best and worst songs from Made in the A.M.
3) Temporary Fix
Why we love it: This is definitely the most Rock-n-roll track off the album, and we really love that. With the last two albums, it seems like the boys have tried to steer away from writing rock songs, so “Temporary Fix” makes us think of Midnight Memories era 1D, where we could jam out to nearly every song.
How it makes us feel:
2) Wolves
Why we love it: Okay, we won’t lie, when we first heard this song, we laughed a bit. It’s so retro; it sounds like it’s a song straight out of the 1950’s. We pictured Harry, Niall, Louis, and Liam wearing matching pastel suits and standing in a line, harmonizing and snapping their fingers to the beat. After a second listen, we still pictured it, but we found ourselves dancing like we were in Hairspray too. For that, this track makes the list.
How it makes us feel:
1)If I Could Fly
Why we love it: This is the song that will make you cry. Hands down. It’s a piano ballad that opens with Harry Styles saying “If I could fly, I’d be coming back home to you.” Not only are we picturing a sad Harry Styles (or other boy of your choice) sitting on his suitcase and staring longingly out the window of a hotel room, but we’re doing it with tears in our eyes after hearing some of these harmonies. Seriously, get your tissues ready.
How it makes us feel:
Those were our favorites, but here are the songs we thought just didn’t live up to our expectations.
3) Infinity
What’s wrong with it: This song is just boring. When looking back on the album as a whole, we can’t even really remember how this one goes, even though it was the only song that was immediately available with the album pre-order. Nothing is particularly wrong with it, it’s just completely unmemorable.
How it makes us feel:
2) AM
What’s wrong with it: This is another song that doesn’t really stand out. Each 1D album has a staple song that just doesn’t fit with the others. Think Act My Age from FOUR. To us, A.M. is MITAM’s Act my Age. Of course, when you use the phrase “talking out of our asses” in a song, it’s not going to be a chart topper.
How it makes us feel:
1)Never Enough
What’s wrong with it: The beat of Never Enough is overpowering, which wouldn’t be such a problem if it was actually a good beat. The lyrics are really repetitive and simple, and the chorus just isn’t enough to make us want to dance in our seat, or even sway to the rhythm. This song is our least favorite, but if anything, it just reminds us that there are so many other great songs to listen to from the album.
How it makes us feel:
So, what do you think? Do any of our faves or least faves match with yours? Overall, we really did enjoy Made in the A.M., and while it is much needed, we’re a little sad the boys will be taking their break after promoting it, so there won’t be a tour any time soon. Either way, we love the album, we’re proud of our boys for the work they’ve put into it, and we’ll gladly go back to our rooms and listen to it with our best friends another three times in a row.
