Movies to Watch this Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Whether you have plans this Valentine’s Day or not, these movies are perfect for a cozy night in or a quick film before bed after a romantic dinner.

  1. Walk the Line

This isn’t your typical Valentine’s day movie. Johnny Cash is one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever and his Wife, June Carter Cash was his partner in life as well as in music. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon perfectly capture the love that Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had. Their love blossoms and has some intense ups and downs but endures it all. In real life, these two even died around the same time. It has been said that Johnny died of a broken heart after June’s death.

2) 27 Dresses

The epitome of forever a bridesmaid and never a bride. Katherine Heigl’s little sister in the movie has accidentally stolen the man of her dreams, who just happens to be her boss too and she is left being the maid of honor for the wedding. With a little drunk dancing on the bar, going from one wedding to another and an unexpected romance, this is one movie you’ll fall in love with over and over again.

3) Shakespeare in Love

With a young and beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow and a handsome Joseph Fiennes, this film gives an insight to young William Shakespeare’s writing of Romeo and Juliet after not being able to write until he meets a woman who inspired him to write it. This rom com 1990’s movie is set in the 1590’s.

4) This Means War

This Means War bring spy-versus-spy action into a romance movie. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play two best friends who are spies and are fighting for the same girl! “Don’t go with the better guy, go with the guy who makes you better.”

5) Me Before You

Young Louise Clark moves from one job to another but always has a happy attitude. William Traynor on the other hand, who has been left paralyzed after an accident, has a cynical outlook on life, quite the opposite of Louisa who becomes his caretaker. As they grow closer no one can foresee the impact they have in each other’s lives.

6) The Princess Bride

A wonderful and exciting fairytale adventure where one couple must fight for true love. After a long separation they find each other but they have to battle rodents of unusual size, an evil prince and more!

As a last solution, Hallmark always has amazing sappy and romantic movies especially around Valentine’s Day. Watch Hallmark originals like, My Secret Valentine starring Lacey Chabert (aka Gretchen Wieners from Mean Girls!) Check out some more of their amazing movies here.
