How to Succeed in College without Really Trying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

As college students, we are always looking for new and better ways to do things. We love “hacks,” we just can’t help ourselves. But what’s wrong with that? So here are some ways you can make your lives as collegiettes way easier. Enjoy!

  1. Use Wolphram Alpha

This lifesaving website is a “computational knowledge engine.” It provides answers and analysis curated by humans. It’s so much more than a calculator (although it is incredibly helpful for calculus). Wolphram Alpha provides answers to multiple subjects, including everything from music, to finance, to chemistry. Totally worth it. And there’s an app!

  1. Keep your room neat

There’s an old cliche that says that a cluttered room equals a cluttered mind. And if college has taught me one thing, it’s that that is true. It might not be possible to have an immaculately organized room all the time, but set aside a few minutes once a week to get everything back on track. I promise you it will make a world of difference.

  1. Find an outlet

College can be stressful. Classes get harder, sleep becomes a distant memory, but having an outlet can change everything. Doing something creative or athletic releases endorphins that make you feel more at ease. Adelphi has group fitness classes that are great for this. Check out their schedule; there’s something for everybody. Drawing and coloring are also great to relieve stress and anxiety.

  1. Know where you can get student discounts

Did someone say coupons? We all love a good discount. Lots of stores (even some you wouldn’t think would have a discount)If you aren’t sure if a store or restaurant has a student discount, you can always ask at the register. Be sure to remember your student ID!

  1. Get a reusable water bottle

This one might sound obvious, but lots of people I know are still wasting massive amounts of money (and plastic! Hello? Climate change?) Universities all over the country have filtered water refill stations. Save money and stay hydrated. You’ll be healthier, too. Drinking more water can help your skin, your digestion, and your immune system.. It’s a win win. (Plus you can get a cute one using your student discounts!) Add lemon for taste and even more benefits.

  1. Get a planner

Writing your tasks down as they’re assigned will help immensely. You’ll know what you have to do and where you have to be. Gone are the days of “Oh, shoot I totally forgot!” Mine has stickers! It’s also a great place to write down shopping lists.

  1. Learn the art of the meal-in-a-mug

Yes, Adelphi’s residence halls are all equipped with full service kitchens. But who has time to preheat an oven and wash all those pans? Not me. Luckily, there are tons of meals that can be made in the microwave using only a mug! I’m sure you’ve heard of mug cakes (recipes available on Pinterest) but this is next level! You can make anything from quiche to stew.

College is great, and you can try all these tips to make your time in college even better. But remember collegiettes, it’s okay to need help. There are some things even Pinterest can’t fix (*gasp* did Jenn just say that?). Never be afraid to reach out and ask for help. There’s a reason universities are equipped with Student Counseling Centers. To contact the Counseling Center at Adelphi, call 516-877-3646. Have a great week, Collegiettes.
