They say that college are the best four years of your life.  I didn’t think it was true until I got to college.  I’m now a Junior and so far my college experience has been the best time of my life.  Here’s a tip for incoming freshmen: College is what you put into it. If you only go to class and don’t get involved, it won’t be fun.  Adelphi University is a big commuter school, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.  Here are some ways you can get involved whether you are a commuter or resident!

1. Go to events on campus

On campus events are so underrated.  Most of the time there will be free food and great music! Don’t think that it’s lame just because it’s held by the unversity. These events are planned with students in mind, so go and have fun! You can check our calendar to see upcoming events!!

2. Use MyAULife

I’m pretty sure I heard a groan or saw an eyeroll through my computer screen just now.  I know you don’t want to use MyAULife.  I didn’t want to use it, but it’s so helpful! Here you can find all of the events and organizations on campus. You can join an organization through MyAULife and get emails about club meetings time and location.  This website is especially helpful if you are a freshman and are overwhelmed.  Scroll through the website and see what you like! You can access it through eCampus > Services > MyAULife

3. Utilize your Commuter Assistant/Resident Assistant

This is a huge one.  Ok, so maybe I’m a little biased because I am a CA, but it’s still important! I don’t think some students realize that CAs and RAs are literally here for them.  Ask us any questions you may have about anything! Both RAs and CAs put on events, so come to them! I’m not sure about Resident Assistants, but Commuter Assistants send out weekly emails with upcoming events on campus.  Unlike RAs, CAs are only for first year commuter students.  However, we are for you even when you are no longer a freshman! Read the emails and go to the events we put on! You’ll get to meet more people and get involved!

4. Join Clubs

This is what has helped me get involved the most.  Like I mentioned earlier, MyAULife has organizations listed that you can join and receive email updates.  You can also go to clubs with friends! Let’s say your roommate is going to a club meeting and you’re free, go with them! Clubs can even help you hold leadership positions whether you’re on the e-board or a chair person.  Getting involved and leadership skills? It’s a win-win.

5. Get an On-Campus Job

I know that sometimes getting involved can be difficult when you have a busy schedule with work and classes.  One way to work and get involved is by getting an on-campus job.  It could be as an admissions ambassador, at the bookstore, in a subject department, almost anywhere! I work at the Early Learning Center on our campus and I’m living the dream.  I get to work with kids, I’m on campus, I get paid, and I’ve met so many great people through my job.  You can find out who’s hiring through friends or through the job search tool on eCampus > Services > Job and Internship Search

6. Join Greek Life

This is my bonus Jonas tip.  Go Greek! I know Greek Life isn’t for everyone, but don’t knock it until you try it. When I first started my freshman year, I swore I would never join a sorority. Why? Because I believed all those stereotypes I saw in the media.  After meeting so many great people in Greek life, I decided to go through recruitment.  I found the perfect fit and I wish I would’ve done it sooner. Greek organizations provide opportunities to need only get involved on campus, but also off campus.  You also see people you know everywhere, so you don’t have to be alone if you don’t want to! It’s not for everyone, but how will you know it’s not for you, if you don’t try it?

Have fun making memories Panthers! HCAUxo
