The St Andrews Ball: Berry ball-gowns, Monochrome and Moustaches!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

Last week the University of Aberdeen’s event of the year came around; the famous St Andrew’s Ball. The St Andrew’s Ball is a famous charity dance, with our dear President even telling me the past few years ‘have been the best nights at uni’. So not going to lie, I was pretty darn excited to go for the first time! Unfortunately, the hotel just couldn’t handle us party people and the whole ball was cancelled halfway through dinner. However, we all descended on Institute Nightclub in our dresses and kilts and a good evening was still had by all (even if we didn’t get our sticky toffee pudding). We couldn’t let those beautiful outfits, glam tans and made-up faces go to waste could we? So here’s the lowdown on the fashion finds of the night, or how we looked at the beginning of the night anyway…

There was a distinct colour scheme going on between some of the girls who study law and I clearly did not get the memo! There were an array of berry toned maxi dresses from the burgundy, oxblood and burnt orange to the lovely shades of plum and navy. All the girls looked stunning in their floor-length gowns as we had all relished the opportunity to dress up for the evening! A trend that was common in all our outfits were the fairly low v-neck plunges (ooh-er) and thigh high splits – but hey, we still all kept it classy and how else would you dance without a split! As all girls will know, there is a certain amount of panic in the lead up to a ball, with everyone scrambling around last minute to try and find a dress. Well these girls mixed beautiful bargains with some slightly higher end pieces and remarkably no one ended up in the same outfit. I nabbed my nude pink number from ASOS while a few of the other girls got their dresses from a range of shops including Coast, Oh My Love and Missguided. Another great tip is just to recycle and steal one of your friend’s dresses from her wardrobe. No one will have any idea they’ve worn it before!

Here’s some familiar faces! Our lovely HC girls were out in full force at the ball as you know we can’t say no to getting dressed up and having a good dance! Another fashion trend that was a fave at the ball was the classic monochrome look. Tasha and Anna styled two beautiful glitzy numbers which already hint at the Christmassy feeling going around campus right now! Anna and Mel again sported the plunge neck maxis but balanced it out with floor length glamour. I think we all scrub up pretty well I must say!

Rhona, Rachael and Kirsten are St Andrew’s Ball veterans and also opted for the monochrome look. Their beautiful dresses show off their figures, which you’ve got to take the opportunity to do at our age!  They also show how high-end looks like Kirsten’s beautiful gown in the middle can make you feel like a princess for a night. Not to be outdone Rhona and Rachael’s dresses from ASOS also wouldn’t look out of place on the red carpet! It’s always nice to mix it up. These gals also paired their gowns with a more understated and effortless hair-style which brings the whole look together and means you don’t look too overdone.

And who could forget the boys?! I think St Andrew’s Ball is the best night for guys to scrub up well as the Scottish theme provides them with a little more room for creativity when it comes to their usual outfits. The always fashionable Chris sported his tartan jacket without tie for a bold and unique look.  Whereas Gareth Hall went for the more classic black tux and bowtie outfit but styled it up with a tartan scarf. There were also plenty of kilts and tartan troos to jazz up the evening’s outfits. Well done boys!

Last but not least are these beautiful ladies! Despite the fact the ball finished early, at least it was all for a good cause as we were raising money for Movember. On all the tables there were moustache memorabilia and our lovely HC writers Emily, Alice and Sophie still manage to look fantastic even whilst sporting the fluffliest of mos. Here’s to next year’s ballin’ and fabulous outfits!
