Highland Games, Anybody?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

CORNHILL HIGHLAND GAMES: SATURDAY JUNE 7TH.

Whether you were born and raised in beautiful Scotland or have moved here from overseas, Her Campus have caught wind of a fantastic event that will promise to fully immerse you in the traditional Scottish culture!

The Cornhill Highland Games, being held only an hour away from Aberdeen, is the perfect opportunity for you to relax after your exams while spectating (or maybe even competing in) the events that will be taking place! The day will commence at 10:30am with the Highland Dancing Championship, closely followed by all of the other events, which will be starting up at 11am, as well as various pipe bands that will be playing throughout the day.

The Games will offer a range of different sports that will vary from heavy events, including shot-put and hammer throw, to light events which will see people competing in the long jump and the hop, step and leap.

The day will also be host to the annual Knock Hill race that has been running since 1970! The eight mile race consists of road running and hill climbs, so if you are already a keen runner or just fancy something to train towards and keep you fit then make sure you pack your trainers!

One of the most exciting events of the day is thought to be the Tug of War, with the first, second and third team for both men and women, qualifying for the Highland Show!

If you have never been to Highland Games before then this is definitely not an opportunity to miss, it will undoubtedly leave you feeling patriotic and maybe even in the mood to try out some of the sports for yourself!

If we have still not quite convinced you, then maybe the fact that there will be evening entertainment, starting at 9pm, including a live band and catering may change your mind! I can’t promise that it will be able to rival the infamous Institute Wednesday, but at least it is a change of scene!

The tickets for the day event are at a reasonable price of £6.00, which is great news for those of us living on a measly student budget!

So try out something different, whether you are a proud Scotswoman or not and you’re guaranteed to have a great day out!
