Sean Clark, engineering student by day, DJ by night, answers Her Campus AU questions about what it’s really like to be a DJ.

  1. When did you start DJ-ing and why do you like to do it?

I started DJ-ing at the start of 2015, honestly with no intention to take it up as a job, just to play around with it and see if I could even work it, let alone start making decent mixes. I like doing it as I enjoy the songs I get to play, and when a mix into a new song sounds good, I get a great buzz

2. Has anything strange ever happened to you whilst you’ve been DJ-ing?

So in my first job as the DJ in Cheerz nightclub, I was once approached by someone who told me: “If you play Beyoncé I’ll give you a kiss,” however I didn’t hear the “I’ll give you a kiss” part, so I went along playing Beyoncé and within seconds I was approached by the same person trying to kiss me. This person was a guy who wouldn’t give up.

3. How do you feel about people requesting songs?

It really depends on what the song it is that is being requested, sometimes I am asked to play a song that I massively dislike and know it won’t go down well, like when someone wants me to play ‘Mad World’ straight after everyone is dancing away, not a good idea. But songs I like, absolutely!!

4. What’s your favourite song at the moment?

My favourite song at the moment is Closer by Chainsmokers, I’ve been playing remixes in the club and loving it.

5. Finally, are you an upstairs or a downstairs person in Institute?

On a Wednesday I’m an upstairs person singing my heart out, but for the weekend definitely downstairs dancing away.
