7 Alternative ideas for Valentine’s Day.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

For many people Valentine’s Day is a predictable or lonely time. However there’s no need to fret, the girls at Her Campus have come up with some great ideas for both our taken and single readers to do on this special day. How about sharing quality time with the people you love for whom you don’t usually get to show your appreciation. Use this day as an excuse to shower your nearest and dearest with your appreciation. Here are some alternative date/ activities to do with the people of your choosing.

1. Have a group date

Why not gather a group of friends or other couples for a stay-at-home date and enjoy each other’s company. Have a switch up of people’s typical roles. For instance, people who usually do the cooking and organising, relax, and come up with some games and activities you can do after your dinner and movie. Those of you who usually are the participant be the organiser, why not return the favour and cook some baked goods for the group date. Mix and match it: why not get an equal number of single boys and girls?

2. Volunteer

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, so consider branching out from romance into charity or friendship. You could babysit for a couple who don’t get the chance to go out because of their work and parental commitments. You could send flowers to a nursing home or volunteer at a non-profitable Valentine’s Day themed fundraiser.

3. Do touristy things in Aberdeen

Since a lot of people dismiss this day to be predictable and clichéd why not plan a few touristy things to do that you and your other half have not done before. Why not start the day in the Cruikshank Botanic Gardens. Then head over to The Lemon Tree or the Blue Lamp for some live comedy later in the evening. The Lemon tree is hosting live comedy from Patrick Monahan and the Blue lamp is hosting comedy by Stuart Mitchell this Valentine’s!

4. Mini Golf

It’s simple but always fun. Head down to Codona’s and have some competitive fun with your other half or friends. You can always have some drinks and head for a nice evening stroll along the beach. Why not embrace the corniness of this annual event and go watch the sun set ?!

5. Ice skating

Head down to the Beach Leisure Centre and go iceskating. It’s a great way to embarrass yourself and be all cute with your lover. Or grab a group of friends and forget the day that lies before us.

6. Build an indoor fort with a picnic inside

Just because you are part of a couple does not mean you have to follow the rules on Valentine’s Day. You can go out for overpriced food any day so forget the generic played out date and have a night in. I recently did an indoor picnic and it was a lot cheaper, warmer and intimate than going out.

7. Be a zookeeper for the day at Edinburgh zoo

If you are fed up of gloomy Aberdeen why not go visit cute animals at Edinburgh Zoo. For bonus points make your date extra special with one of Edinburgh’s zoo keeper experience packages. It may be a little bit pricey but it sounds totally worth it.
