I'm an SEO Specialist — Here's What a Day in My Life Looks Like

When was the last time you Googled something? Whether you were searching for the answer to a simple question, reading reviews about a product, or looking for specific services, I guarantee you’ve picked up your cell phone or opened up the browser on your computer to Google something at least once today. Heck, we’re at the point we have turned “Google” into a verb. Google. Googling. Googled.

Digital marketing is all around us and with the increase in businesses, websites, and blogs, it is more important than ever to have a digital marketing strategy to get ahead of the competition. To be seen by the maximum amount of people possible. And that’s what I do. I get my clients seen.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (also known as SEO) is the process of reaching the maximum amount of users and driving traffic to your website (or blog!) organically. By implementing SEO as part of your digital marketing strategy, you are following the “rules” that search engines have put in place to help your website rank (AKA, show up when a user submits a search query through a search engine) higher and eventually, on the first page!

What my day looks like

I have around 35-40 clients that I do SEO, social media management, content writing, and email marketing for across all industries (including HVAC, health care, beauty, real estate/property management, and more!), so my day-to-day is a little hectic, but I try to keep the same general schedule.

9:00 – 10:00 AM: Emails & social media

I try to get into work around 8:30 AM or so, but in the case that I’m a little slow to start in the mornings, my day starts at 9:00 AM. Once I get situated and have a coffee in hand, I’ll tackle my inbox, answering any urgent emails first (and creating a to-do list!). Once I’m down to inbox zero, I’ll head over and do any manual social media posting for my clients before moving on to any SEO-related tasks.

10:00 – 12:00 PM: Website edits, on-Site optimization, strategy

Once I push out Instagram posts for the day and answer any pressing emails, I’ll sit down and go over my to-do list to work on any website edits, on-site optimization (SEO is a two-part strategy: on-site and off-site), and make adjustments to strategy. Most of these tasks are relatively easy but take up the most time (adding new services to the menu, optimizing titles & meta descriptions, resubmitting XML Sitemaps, etc.) so I’d rather just get it all done in the morning.

When it comes to making any adjustments to strategy, I’ll take into consideration the time of the year (are certain services seasonal?) and make any adjustments to the keywords/services we are currently optimizing for. This might mean utilizing Google Analytics and Google Search Console to get a better idea the client is being found and how the user is engaging with their website. Once I decide to make any adjustments, I’ll make a short to-do list of tasks that need to be completed in order to shift the focus.

12:00 – 1:00 PM: LUNCH

If we’re being honest, this is my absolute favorite part of the day but who’s isn’t!? Most days I will eat lunch at my desk while I get some work done but if it’s nice out, I’ll head out of the office for lunch or take a quick walk to get the blood pumping. Lunchtime is also my opportunity to explore the city for a bit or knock a few errands off of my to-do list so I can relax after work.

1:00 – 3:00 PM: Content, content, content

A large portion of my job is writing content (original, high-quality, consistent content is an important Google ranking factor!) for my clients and it takes up a majority of my day so I like to save it for the afternoon. Typically, I have an idea of what types of content I’ll be writing to ensure we are highlighting the keywords, services, and locations my client wants to be found for but if I’m trying to switch things up, I’ll do a little research first. Once I have a topic and keywords outlined, I’ll get to writing.

3:00 – 5:00 PM: Catching up

Once I’m done with any content I needed to get done, I’ll circle back to my inbox (okay, who am I joking? I check my inbox 24/7) and tackle any other projects or tasks that clients emailed me about throughout the day. This could mean putting together an email marketing campaign for a promotion, writing any additional pieces of content, or putting together a Facebook Ad campaign.

The afternoon is also the best time for me to sit down with any of my coworkers if they needed help with any client issues or have questions regarding website edits, implementation of specific tools, etc. 3:00 PM is usually when I start losing steam, so sometimes I’ll walk over to Starbucks and grab a coffee or have a quick snack to help me recharge.

Between my “regular” schedule, internal and external meetings, conference calls, a handful of other responsibilities (I’ll get to those another day!), and the occasional fire that needs to be put out, my days are hectic but they go by fast. Sometimes I wish we had longer work hours so I had enough time to get it all done, but then I realize I sound like a psychopath.
