Growing up, September always felt like a mini reset. It was the month that I went back to school, marking an end to summer and becoming the time of year where sport and club sign-ups began. I loved watching back-to-school hauls and “day in the life” videos on YouTube to get even more excited about the new school year ahead. And this mindset never left me, it just evolved over the years from new teachers and school supplies to self-improvement goals, focusing on myself, and a chance to start over. Little did I know this feeling would be shared with so many others and become the premise of its own mini holiday: Girl New Year.

Taking place (unofficially) on Sept. 1, Girl New Year has been making rounds on the internet, especially on Instagram and TikTok, for a few years now — and it has seriously been gaining traction in 2026. Many creators have been acknowledging Girl New Year and sharing their plans for it. “I want to show myself how good life gets when you invest back into yourself,” creator Cami Sophia shared of her Girl New Year plans in a Sept. 1 video.

It totally makes sense why Girl New Year starts on Sept. 1. September marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, as well as the month that begins to bring in the cooler weather.

Girl New Year is an adjacent mindset to the great lock in, a personal challenge meant to inspire you to stay focused (aka “lock in”) on building healthy habits. The great lock in takes place during the “-ber” months (Sept. 1 to Dec. 31) as a way to finish the year strong, give yourself a second chance for completing your previous New Year’s resolutions, and build good habits before the next New Year’s Day, not after.

Girl New Year can serve as the kickoff to the great lock in. Adding new healthy habits and getting rid of old ones, setting personal goals, and making general lifestyle changes are all ideas associated with Girl New Year. Just keep in mind: Much like with regular New Year, instead of starting too strong and abandoning changes, the goal is to revamp your life and reinvent yourself in only the ways you want.

we can do this together

Of course, Girl New Year is strictly about the vibe. It’s not a recognized holiday, so if you don’t like the idea of Girl New Year, you do not need to acknowledge it. But if you do, then Happy Girl New Year to you!
