Although it may feel like this winter has been never-ending, summer is just around the corner! Now is the perfect time to start making some summer plans, which, for many students, includes studying abroad. Summer 2023 is the perfect chance to study abroad if you don’t want to spend a whole semester outside of the country, and there are hundreds of study abroad programs to choose from.Â
But it’s no secret that costs can add up when you spend time visiting another country — from flights and tuition to groceries and souvenirs, creating a budget is a daunting task! If you feel overwhelmed thinking about the study abroad process, you aren’t alone. Luckily, there are dozens of study abroad scholarships out there to help cover some, or all, of these costs. Here are five summer 2023 study abroad scholarships to look into to help fund your overseas adventure!
- IFSA
-
The Institute for Study Abroad, or IFSA, is a program that strives to make studying abroad accessible to as many students as possible. IFSA has 14 scholarship applications available, and more than one in three applicants will receive funding through a scholarship. The priority deadline for scholarship applications is March 1, and the final deadline is April 1.
- Benjamin A. Gilman
-
The Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship provides study abroad awards for students currently receiving a Federal Pell Grant. The program is specifically for students of limited financial means who may not be able to otherwise study abroad. The scholarship provides around 3,000 students with awards of up to $5,000. The summer application deadline is March 16.
- Phi Kappa Phi
-
The Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi provides study abroad scholarships to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. While you don’t need to be a member of the society to apply, you do need to attend a university that has an active chapter. The application deadline is March 15, and study abroad programs must begin between May 1 and June 24.
- CIEE
-
The Council on International Educational Exchange, or CIEE, has many scholarships and grants available for students studying abroad with one of their programs. There is a variety of both need-based scholarships, based on students’ Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from FAFSA, and merit-based awards. CIEE scholarship applications for summer 2023 are due on April 1.
- AIFS
-
The American Institute for Foreign Study, or AIFS, also has several opportunities for scholarships and grants for students participating in their programs. Over the summer, students can apply for scholarships like the Russel R. Taylor Foundation scholarship, or apply to be an Overseas Ambassador. Application deadlines vary, but are usually around March 1.
