Got Old Jeans? Here’s How To Give Them A New Purpose

*Blue Jeans Go Green™ is a trademark of Cotton Incorporated. UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation is a trademark of Bonded Logic, Inc.

Last weekend, I got hit with a wave of its-the-new-year energy and decided to clean out my entire closet. During this all-day excursion, I uncovered too many clothing items I had not worn in forever, including jeans that no longer fit and are too worn to wear. That’s when I remembered hearing about Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program, an amazing initiative that gives old denim a new life, keeps textile waste out of landfills, and helps community building projects across the country.

Their goal is to help us become more aware of how our fabric and fashion choices can affect the Earth — from how clothes are made to where they go once they’re worn out. By recycling our old denim, we can feel good together about acting responsibly to protect our planet. And since authentic denim is made from cotton, a natural and sustainable fiber, it can be broken down into its natural cotton fiber state and transformed into something new, like UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation!

Since 2006, the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program has recycled over 3,900,000 pieces of denim, saving your old jeans from ending up in landfills where they’d otherwise join millions of pounds of textiles thrown out every year, and created over 6,000,000 square feet of denim insulation. Better yet, every year, the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program contributes a portion of this natural cotton fiber insulation to community building projects across the country – meaning your old jeans can be recycled into the insulation that helps keep a family warm this winter. How amazing is that? TBH, I can’t imagine a better use for the jeans I no longer wear.

The Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program strives to make the world greener with its commitment to sustainability, and dedication to making a difference across America.

If you’re ready to take a step towards living more sustainably, recycle that old pair of jeans you can no longer wear or consider starting your own denim drive! And when you need to buy a new pair — because let’s be real, we all need a go-to pair of jeans — remember to check the label while  shopping to make sure your denim is made from cotton. Check out these brands who participate in Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program and offer exclusive discounts for recycling your old pairs through the program!

Now more than ever, it’s time to be more mindful of our lifestyle choices so we can truly do good for the planet. This year, I’m making a personal commitment to more sustainable habits, and that starts with recycling clothes that have been sitting in my closet for way too long. If you can relate, know that we can help save 1,950 tons of textile waste from a landfill just by choosing to recycle — talk about a significant impact. Check out Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program for more info about how to get involved in the movement for a greener world!
