Nneka Nweke is a junior at Texas Women’s University, where she studies psychology with a premed emphasis. She’s involved in a ton of organizations on campus (“too many to list” according to Nneka!), and has leadership roles in most of them. There is no doubt that she’s a busy girl with a lot on her plate, but there is one less thing Nneka has to worry about these days. Nneka just found out that she is the winner of our Dream Dorm Design Contest with OCM, which means that she won $1,000 to redecorate her dorm room!
Nneka’s Pinterest board with her dream room design was selected out of all of the contest entries, and now her dream room can become a reality! Nneka is “really really excited” (who wouldn’t be?!) about her big win, and she chatted with HC about what she plans to do now that she’s won the contest. Read our full Q&A with Nneka below!
Her Campus: Tell us about making your pinboard!
Nneka Nweke: I included a lot of different things, mainly stuff for my dorm room. I wanted to give it a homey aspect, with things that I would want in my room. My favorite color is a light aqua blue, so I went with that. I put a blue rug, and the sheets are aqua, so that was the basis of the theme. It looks good with black and white concepts, so that’s where I got the whole theme. I really like art and creativity, so I went with a Love and Hope theme for the art. And I like quotes. Even though I didn’t put all of them on my pinboard, there are a ton of quotes in frames at OCMÂ that I want to buy!
HC: Are there any favorite items that you can’t wait to receive?
NN: I really like the [Posh Decorative] Chandelier! And the [Twigz] Shower Curtain [in Black and White]! All the shower curtains I’ve gotten before are just plain white, I love the one I put on my pinboard.
HC: Are there any other OCM products you’ve had your eye on?
NN: I’ve actually had my alarm clock for over 7 years, and I didn’t put it on my pinboard but I was looking at OCM and they have a [Sony Dock Clock for iPod and iPhone] alarm clock, and I could use that with my phone, so that’s one thing I really want!
HC: Why do you love OCM’s selection?
NN: OCM has sets, and things match! My sheets that I bought freshman year are all different colors, and I had to go to a lot of stores to try to find things that matched. But I like when things are in sets and so they look good together. With OCM, once you start with your bed sheet you can find things that go with it for your bed, for your bathroom, for your room!
HC: Do you think you’ll keep shopping with OCM in the future?
NN: Most definitely! It makes it easier since you don’t have to travel, you can order everything online and have it shipped to you, and OCM has value packages that make things really easy. When my little sisters come up to college, I’ll tell my parents to use OCM!
HC: What does your room look like now, before the OCM makeover?
NN: My room is somewhat decorated. I have something on each wall, because I don’t like blank walls and I like something to look at when I’m studying. Right now my study area has a ton of different colors!
HC: And what it will look like once you’re done?
NN: I think I might redesign everything around the new OCM stuff, and make everything match. But I’ll also save some stuff for the future, because I want to go to medical school and I’ll have my own apartment then. So I want to get things that I can use in the future, and keep using for a long time.
HC: What do your roomies think about your big win? Will you be getting anything for them?
NN: They’re really excited, everyone that I’ve told asks, “How do normal people like you win things like this?” I keep telling them that I don’t know, that I just saw it and I was interested, and decided to enter! And then they ask if I’m getting them anything, and I just say, “We’ll see!”
