Lose the Freshman 15: Staying positive despite setbacks

It’s Monday. And it’s weigh in day. And I’m feeling pretty blah about it.

My weight this morning was 130.5 – about 2 pounds shy of my weekly goal.  This brings my total weight loss over 6 weeks to 7.5 pounds. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t upset. But, there’s no use dwelling on disappointment. Here’s what I’m going to do better next week:

More cardio: Between spraining my ankle and travelling home twice, it has been difficult to get in any cardio. But, I can’t let it be an excuse if I want to reach my goal. If I want to get past this seemingly endless plateau, I’m going to have to really push myself. This means longer, more strenuous workouts — the kind that leave me really, really tired and sweaty.

No more cheating: Okay, I’ll admit it — I haven’t been following the Jump Start Diet like I should. Aside from last week’s pizza fiasco, there were a few more times where I indulged. I had chicken chow mien over the weekend and a cannoli yesterday. I also tend to take a bite of whatever Max has since he gets to eat the yummy stuff like beef and cheddar croissants or cheeseburgers and fries.  Even though it’s just a small addition to my daily calorie intake, over the week it definitely adds up. It’s okay to treat yourself to something delicious every once in a while, but I might be slightly over-doing it.

Still stay positive: Even though I was short of my weekly goal (again), I’ve still lost almost 8 pounds, which is fantastic. I have to focus on my what has been my goal from the beginning: to be healthier. The whole reason I wanted to do this in the first place was to learn how to take better care of myself, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’ve said it from my very first post — I’m not fat, I just don’t take care of myself the way I should. Reaching my goal weight will be a result of making healthy choices. I can’t let a number upset me when I’m doing something more important than losing weight – and that’s living a healthier lifestyle.

With four weeks left and 10.5 pounds until I reach my goal, I will have to lose a little more than 2.5 pounds each week.

My goal this week is to lose 2.5 pounds.

Still hopeful,

Samantha
