Emily is so focused on sustainability that she made it her major. She’s currently studying abroad in Canada for a year-long sustainability education program in Halifax, and has been conducting research across the city—surveying city businesses, industry associations and waste management services for inputs and outputs to their production.

Shatoyia founded her own foundation, the First Ladies of Poverty Foundation, to create programming, grants, scholarships and events that help to alleviate poverty through basic needs programming and sustainability while empowering women of color and allies.

Here, she writes a weekly column asking readers to make three small changes that would reduce their environmental footprint. Her advice is making waves on campus, and she’s currently founding Exeter’s first ever Green Earth Society.

After discovering the lack of renewable energy resources in her home state of Alabama, Abigail created WEARE (We Envision Alabamian Renewable Energy). Through this organization, Abigail and her colleagues educate Alabamians about the importance of renewable energy and sustainability. WEARE also helps citizens register to vote and assists with political campaigns for candidates who prioritize solar energy.
