The 11 Most Important Selfies Ever Taken

In the future, we’re fairly certain that millennials will be remembered as a generation who chronicled their lives through selfies. Maybe history books will have illustrious iPhone selfies instead of painted or professionally photographed portraits of important political figures. Maybe.

The selfie generation is an important one, but how can we determine what the best selfies ever were? With millions to choose from, the task was a daunting one. Hours of Internet scrolling later, however, we have compiled and curated a collection of the most important selfies ever taken. You can thank us with a Snapchat.

1. Beyoncé and a lucky fan

Queen Bey gave this fan the greatest treat of her life when she posed for a selfie at her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour concert.

2. Meryl Streep and Hillary Clinton

Selfies like this prove that there cannot be too much female power in one picture. Streep and Clinton got cozy for a photo at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors gala, showing some pearly whites and blinged-out jewels. We’d like this one hanging on our wall, personally.

3. Miley Cyrus with bleached eyebrows

The “Wrecking Ball” singer posted this pic last year and left us wondering, “What?”

4. Ellen DeGeneres and (Almost) Everyone Who Has Ever Mattered

At this year’s Oscars, Ellen posted a selfie that was so jam-packed with celebs that the tweet became the most retweeted one ever.

5. Japanese astronaut with special guests Sun and Earth

Aki Hoshide snapped this pic of himself while chilling out in outer space, casually including both the Sun and planet Earth in the photo, which makes this the most out-of-this-world selfie ever (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves).

6. “Just hanging out” in Moscow

Russian daredevil Kirill Oreshkin snapped this pic after climbing to the top of one of Moscow’s tallest buildings. Just don’t look down.

7. Bill Nye the Science Guy, President Obama and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson

So much brainpower in one picture.

8. Duck Face baby

If this is real, then this is our favorite baby in the world (and that’s saying a lot). Who knew it would take an infant to perfect the pursed-lipped pose that every girl has been trying to get right for years?

9. Pug Selfie

We can’t tell if this is hilarious or just makes us feel weird and uncomfortable, but it’s important nonetheless. Pug awareness, you know?

10. Squirrel Selfie

Things are getting weird, people.

11. Jackie Kennedy throwback selfie

Proving that she was the chicest first lady in history, Jackie Kennedy took this selfie decades before it ever became a “thing.”

Selfies are the bomb dot com. Look for ’em in high-school history textbooks in, like, 75 years.
