‘Black Panther’ Has Officially Surpassed the $1 Billion Mark

Black Panther” has officially crossed the $1 billion mark globally, sitting at the top of the box office now for four consecutive weeks, The Washington Post reports.

According to Vulture, the superhero film has ranked among the top films to make ten figures in Hollywood history.

As of Friday, the Wakandan king has made more than $520 million domestically and more than $419 million in foreign theaters, Vulture reports. But when the film opened on March 9th in China, the Marvel movie made $22.7 million on its opening day, and by Sunday, it had made more than $66.5 million, The Post reports.

According to The Post, this is the 16th Disney movie to make more than $1 billion. Other Marvel movies that crossed the $1 billion mark along with “Black Panther” are: “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Iron Man 3″ and “Captain America: Civil War.”

Ryan Coogler, director of “Black Panther,” in a statement on the film’s opening weekend that “never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong.”

“It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film,” Coogler added.

The most important lesson, however, is that “Black Panther” has disproved the old notion that films with predominantly minority casts would perform well at the box office.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on passing the $1 billion mark. Wakanda forever!
