I can’t be the only one who is already on a rewatch of the first episode of The Last Of Us Season 2. While Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger that is guaranteed to carry throughout Season 2, the world of Ellie and Joel navigating a post-apocalyptic America is going to become bigger with new faces, including Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. Spoiler alert: Spoilers for Season 1 and Season 2, Episode 1 of The Last Of Us follow.
Season 2 of The Last of Us begins five years after Ellie and Joel begin their cross-country trip to find FEDRA, a military group working to find a cure to further prevent humanity from getting infected through cordyceps. Season 1 follows Joel and Ellie as Joel is sent on a mission to deliver Ellie to FEDRA, as it’s revealed that she is immune to the disease and is the only possible solution to finding a cure. However, in the Season 1 finale, Joel saves Ellie and kills the remaining FEDRA and Firefly soldiers, leaving only a few survivors behind. One of those survivors, Abby, plays a large part into the world of Season 2, and plays a crucial part into Ellie’s world five years later.
While Season 2 of The Last of Us is going to have some major shake ups this season, one thing is clear: Things will never be the same as they were in Season 1. Here’s everything you need to know about Abby’s character, and what she means for both Ellie and Joel.
Abby is introduced in the season 1 finale.
In the Season 1 finale, Ellie is taken away to one of the FEDRA hospitals in order to extract her blood for a cure. Joel, desperate to find her and to raise her as his child, goes through the hospital and attempts to find Ellie before she is killed. As Joel begins his descent throughout the hospital, he takes down the staff, other faction members, and anyone who stands in his way in order to reach Ellie. When he finally finds her on the operating table, there is a group of doctors and a young girl who are waiting to conduct the operation before Joel enters the room. As the head doctor pleads with Joel, Joel shoots and kills the doctor in front of the other people in the room, forcing them to untie Ellie. We learn that one of the people in the room is a girl named Abby, whose father was the one killed by Joel.
Abby is determined to find and kill joel in season 2.
During the opening sequence of Season 2, we see the aftermath of the hospital murders and the graveyard of all the members who were murdered by Joel. We’re officially introduced to Abby, who is mourning the loss of her father while also determined to find his murderer. Abby asks her group, known as the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), to help track him down and punish Joel for what he committed in front of her. As the first episode of Season 2 flashes forward to five years later, we learn that Abby has found Joel and Ellie in Jackson, Wyoming, and she wants to seek vengeance for her father’s death.
Abby will play a large role in ellie’s arc for season 2.
While Ellie is not aware of who Abby is, Abby is aware that Joel killed her father to save Ellie. Season 2 of The Last Of Us will deal with the aftermath of Abby’s discovery of Joel and Ellie’s whereabouts, and ultimately, what will happen when the two girls are face to face with each other. Both are fighting for their chances to survive, and Season 2 will explore their relationship with one another as the series progresses.
I can not wait to see Ellie and Abby meet for the first time, and find out what has changed for both Joel and Ellie throughout Season 2 of The Last of Us.
