Web Series “Dating Rules from My Future Self” Offers Dating Tips via Text

The college dating scene can get seriously complicated. But what if you could get all the answers about your love life today from yourself ten years in the future? In the new web series Dating Rules From My Future Self, there’s an app for that!

From the producers of Gossip Girl, Dating Rules from My Future Self is a short web series that follows the romantic mishaps of 27-year-old Lucy Lambert who starts getting these secret text messages from her future self by ten years, tipping her off via text to change her dating strategy. She has has a secure job, a great circle of friends and a longtime boyfriend who has just popped the question. But it all starts with one text message that tells her what she already knows: he’s not the one.

The web series, produced by Alloy Entertainment (the same company that brought you shows like Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries) has already aired eight episodes and have been getting a lot of attention with almost 2 million views. And now, with the season finale premiering last week, fans of the series are already buzzing about a second season.

It stars Shiri Appleby along with some familiar faces with Alison Becker (Parks & Recreation), Bryce Johnson (Pretty Little Liars), Mircea Monroe (Episodes) and Martin Starr (Knocked Up) as her co-stars.

“I was really wanting to be a part of it because I think it’s that moment that a woman starts clicking into that voice in her head,” she said in an interview with MTV. “And sort of see future Lucy as that [voice]. That’s the moment where Lucy’s subconscious, in the form of these text messages, [weighs in on her life]. One of my very favorite shows growing up and even now, in repeats, is Sex and the City, and I’m like “Where is that show? I want to see it today with my friends.'”

For you Sex and the City fans who have been missing that televised dose of sassy girl power from several seasons ago, Shiri said that this is the show for you. “And when I watch the story between Kelcy and Amanda I really felt like there it is. Those three girls represent Carrie and her whole gang of girls, and I even felt like the Dave character (played by the always-hot Taylor Kinney) reminded me of Big,” she said. “It was sort of like being able to go into my favorite show and play Carrie Bradshaw.”

It’s one of those rom-com series with a touch of magical realism (think Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva) and while the pilot episode definitely feels like just a basic introduction into Lucy’s world, the characters are easy to fall in love with. I became invested in Lucy right away. She’s quirky, adorable, and totally relatable as a single twenty-something aged girl. BFF Kelcy (Allison Becker) is hysterical and easily likeable while her other friend Vincent (Martin Starr) is her work place support system.

Overall, Dating Rules is promising and it doesn’t look like they’ll slowing down anytime soon! It’s a great show to just kick back and relax to with your friends. And what better way to learn the do’s and don’ts of dating than watching Lucy learn from her mistakes?

The series premiered earlier this month, but you can catch up on the first season either on Hulu or their Facebook page.
