Timeout

Hey Collegiettes!

It was recently brought to my attention that spring break is just a few days away. It could have been the dorm closing form taped to my door, or the professors threats to “wise guys” that would try to leave early, or even the overeager students in shorts and a tee (it snowed yesterday people!) but it was something much less humorous. At the gym this weekend, a girl collapsed. Her ankle gave out from overtraining.

I realize some of you out there may be in a bathing suit shortly, or seeing your long-distance boo or maybe just wanting immediate results but over working is not safe or effective. Your body is the most incredible tool you’ll ever have, but just like any other tool it’s not invincible. I found an article on Web MD all about fitness injuries, it’s worth a read. http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guide/what-to-do-when-fitness-inju…

A great instrument that Self Magazine offers is the workout log (http://www.self.com/mylogs/fitness/daily). Tracking your progress will help paint a realistic picture of your progress. You can also log what you eat (http://www.self.com/mylogs/food/daily) so you know exactly where you stand.

Pushing yourself too hard can result in injury which means those gym sesions are a thing of the past until you heal. So unless you’re at the Olympics, feet from the finish line, going for the gold, listen to your body! The only safe way to train is gradually. In honor of this post, I am taking my first day off from the gym and I encourage you to do the same. In the name of safe training, of course.

Comment below and let me know how you train safely and enjoy a day off!
